DESCRIPTION

Under the close supervision and guidance of the Principal Investigator (PI), graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and lab manager, the Staff Research Associate will perform standard repetitive research procedures to generate, analyze and validate single-cell sequencing data from zebrafish infected with microbial pathogens (bacteria and viruses). Projects will involve examining inflammation and the responses of the immune system and nervous system to infection. Tasks include isolating cells/nuclei from zebrafish, extracting RNA, barcoding transcripts and submitting them for sequencing. Incumbent will analyze the sequencing data, identify regulated transcripts and mutate genes using CRISPR. Incumbent will assess infected larvae using microscopy (confocal and immunofluorescence), maintain strains of mutant and transgenic zebrafish, maintain and generate microbial mutants (pathogenic and non-pathogenic species), manipulate zebrafish gene function, and genotype zebrafish and microbes. Will participate in the publication of scientific manuscripts based on experiments performed (when appropriate) and perform other SRA 1-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of aquaculture/fisheries, genetics, and/or developmental biology; acquired through a BA or BS in biology, aquaculture/fisheries, or related field, and/or equivalent combination of experience and education.

  • Experience and ability needed to analyze RNAseq data for differential expression.

  • Experience with standard recombinant DNA research techniques and standard laboratory procedures such as genome editing, DNA cloning, and immunostaining.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to clearly and concisely communicate ideas, thoughts, problems, and policies, with a strong portfolio of interpersonal skills which include the ability to interact with tact, diplomacy and sensitivity.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize, set priorities, meet deadlines, and efficiently carry out multiple and varied tasks during each workday.

  • Ability to proactively and appropriately facilitate the maintenance of lab supplies and equipment, maintain steady levels of lab supplies and organized records.

  • Experience with microscopy, preferably confocal imaging.

  • Experience with zebrafish aquaculture.

  • Demonstrated experience in microbiology, with some experience in bacterial genetics.

  • Familiarity with Apple and PC computers and demonstrated ability to work independently with a variety of computer applications such as word processing, database, spreadsheet, and graphics software. Willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed.

  • Ability to keep accurate records of experimental procedures and results, to discuss them, and to prepare relevant oral and written presentations.

  • Demonstrated knowledge/understanding and at least some experience with Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Familiarity with a Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items. Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement.

  • Knowledge and ability to order lab supplies and equipment, with the ability to proactively and appropriately facilitate the maintenance of all lab supplies and equipment.

  • Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.

  • Ability to inject zebrafish embryos at the 1-cell stage with reliable and consistent results.

  • Demonstrated level of practical competency in the handling, breeding, and rearing of zebrafish.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be willing and able to safely work with, and in proximity to, BSL2 bacteria and viruses. Must have the appropriate physical strength for handling aquaculture equipment.

  • Appropriate dexterity for manipulating zebrafish embryos.

  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including occasional evening or weekend work, as required for experiments.

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $58,151 - $69,363 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $27.85 - $33.22

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
