Job Summary

Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) is seeking a custodian who works on second shift to perform a broad range of custodial services necessary to primarily maintain the Union Hills Road campus (with possible work at the Black Mountain campus) and facilities in a clean and orderly condition for the effective and safe use by students, faculty, staff, and the public.

Additional Information

Services include routine and special cleaning as needed.
  • Sweeps, mops, waxes and vacuums floors/carpets
  • Dusts, polishes and waxes furniture
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, locker rooms, and/or equipment, including fixtures such as sinks, urinals, and toilets
  • Washes windows, mirrors, vents, and walls
  • Inspects and performs minor repairs on equipment, furniture and fixtures
  • Empties trash and washes refuse containers
  • Moves furniture and equipment; cleans and prepares spaces for meetings or other needs as requested.
  • Removes graffiti, stains, and/or other substances from counters, walls, desks, floors, furniture, doors, partitions, and/or other surfaces
  • Collects and removes trash
  • Services and replenishes soap dispensers, paper towels, toilet tissues, toilet seat covers, and similar items
  • Locks, unlocks, or otherwise secures areas or buildings as required
  • Power washes exterior areas as needed
  • Inspects and maintains facilities during vacation periods
  • Performs assigned tasks in response to requests and complaints
  • Adheres to applicable policies and procedures
  • Keeps assigned tools and/or equipment in clean and safe working condition
  • May operate a trash compactor and/or other equipment such as sweepers, blowers, power washers, vacuums, electric carts, scrubbing machines, steam cleaners, floor strippers, or other equipment related to custodial work
  • Cleans and/or washes chalkboards or whiteboards, and related equipment such as erasers, as requested
  • Reads, understands, and interprets safety sheets, warning labels, and instructions to safely utilize chemicals, cleaners, and/or other materials
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Essential Functions

35% Sweeps, mops, strips, and waxes floors; vacuums and cleans carpets; cleans whiteboards, dusts, and polishes furniture. In-depth knowledge of property chemical handling, floor-care, general cleaning techniques, and knowledge of use of cleaning equipment

20% Maintains restrooms, break rooms, clean cobwebs inside and outside

15% Performs minor maintenance tasks and reports repairs that are needed; arranges furniture and equipment for events; other duties as assigned commensurate to grade level of position

10% Inspects and conducts routine maintenance of small equipment used by custodial

10% Empties and cleans trash cans and recycles receptacles; uses electric vehicles to haul trash and equipment when necessary

10% Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of formal or informal education or experience which assures the ability to read, write, and speak at a level sufficient for the successful completion of the job duties as described.

Desired Qualifications
  1. Experience working in a college or large school environment.
  2. Experience providing customer service to a wide variety of people in medium to large facilities.
  3. Two (2) years of experience working with industrial cleaning methods and chemicals.
  4. Two (2) years of experience operating custodial equipment.
  5. Two (2) years experience with proper use, storage, dilution and labeling of cleaning products
  6. One (1) year experience in conducting quality control checks


Special Working Conditions

  • Travel to campus during interview/selection process will be at candidate's own expense
  • MCCCD does not sponsor individuals for any type of work visas
  • May require work at the Black Mountain campus
  • Will require the ability to work as a flexible team member on special events or projects for the good of the business

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body.

Working Conditions: Work is primarily performed in an indoor environment with moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, fumes, odors, poor ventilation, gasses, blood, or other body fluids). Work may sometimes occur in dusty or seldom occupied facilities and as such, moderate exposure to dust or other particulates can be expected. Some indoor work environments may not be air-conditioned. Portions of work tasks may be completed outdoors which involve exposure to a variety of weather conditions, for short or long durations, including rain, wind, dust, cold temperatures, and extreme desert heat. May require the use and climbing of ladders. Some work may be performed in an office/computer workstation and require the use of a computer and keyboard for training, to check emails, and/or communicate with coworkers and supervision. This classification requires that an incumbent be on their feet, standing, or walking while performing duties, for the majority, if not all, of a work shift.
