The University of Arizona's University Information Technology Services (UITS) invites you to apply to the role of Cloud Engineer.

This position is responsible for the technical implementation of solutions to improve the visibility, security, operational stability, and regulatory compliance of the University's cloud environment. Uses an extensive knowledge of Azure and AWS and Azure services and infrastructure as code to propose and deploy secure and compliant enterprise cloud services.

Specific Projects of Interest: * Campus Cloud Infrastructure - assists campus departments in migration of server environments into AWS * Managed Cloud Services - assists in the development and deployment of cloud-based managed services in AWS and Azure * Secure AD - assists campus departments in migration of AD resources to a hardened Active Directory environment.

The Managed Cloud Services team is a collection of motivated and ambitious AWS engineers, Microsoft Architects, and Systems Administrators from varied technical backgrounds who rely on their creativity and expertise to resolve a wide array of institutional challenges by developing innovative solutions to campus computing needs.

Candidates working anywhere in the U.S. may be considered for a remote assignment.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Designs and deploys infrastructure as code to improve the security, operational stability, interoperability and maturity of the U of A's Azure and AWS infrastructure.
  • Designs, deploys, documents, proceduralizes, and maintains managed Azure and AWS service offerings to be consumed by campus departments.
  • Consults on and acts as an escalation point for Active Directory and SCCM infrastructure to enhance operational maturity best practices and automate processes in a large-scale, Microsoft enhanced security baseline-compliant AD environment.
  • Consults with other architecture & engineering teams in the adoption of cloud technology and best practices. Participates in peer review of new service designs and architectures.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Expert level knowledge of the following technologies/services: - Azure compute technologies: Azure SQL, Azure DevOps, Azure Monitoring and Security, Azure Virtual Desktop, Logic Apps, Azure Web Apps, Automation Accounts, Azure Functions, Power Platform. - Azure Networking: Virtual Networks, VPN Gateways, Network Security Groups.
  • Knowledge of cloud automation technologies (AWS CloudFormation, ARM Templates, Bicep, Ansible, AWS Code Build, Jenkins).
  • Knowledge of configuration management (SCCM, Intune, Chef, Puppet), containerization (AWS ECS, Docker), and source code management tools (Azure DevOps, Subversion, RCS, Git).
  • Ability to be self-motivated, results-oriented with a demonstrated ability to design, collaborate and deliver robust enterprise IT services from need to production.
  • Understanding of and an interest in current and emerging technologies demonstrated through training, job experience, and/or industry activities.
  • Ability to work as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Ability to self-direct and begin to take on architectural design projects of a novel and complex nature.
  • Ability to innovate, design, and implement new service offerings.
  • Ability to quickly learn new skills and technologies.
  • Ability to multi-task between multiple complex projects and operational requests.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with and influence others to adopt new technology offerings and methodologies.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or a related area.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

OR

  • 12 years of progressive Information Technology experience in area of assignment which may include systems administration, network systems administration, applications design/development or combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications Experience with:


  • EntraID, role based access controls, Active Directory and IAM concepts.
  • AWS services: EC2, VPC, Amazon WorkSpaces, CloudFormation, RDS, IAM, Security Groups, AWS Backup, AWS Systems Manager, ELB/ALB, etc.
  • Networking: VLANs, TCP/IP, firewall, switches, routing, etc.
  • Services: DNS, DHCP, NTP, etc.
  • Scripting languages: Powershell, Python, YAML, etc.
  • Logging/monitoring tools: Amazon CloudWatch, Log Analytics, Splunk, etc.

As a campus with residential housing facilities, the Main Campus ASR also includes a combined Annual Fire Safety report with information on fire statistics and fire safety systems, policies, and procedures.
