The Engineer II position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer II position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. An Engineer II is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer II effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.

The Engineer III position solves complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.

This position is a transmission line project engineer who performs various engineering activities associated with the design and installation of electrical transmission facilities for Duke Energy. The position activities include designing and routing transmission lines, reviewing engineering studies, proposals and programs, analyzing and designing structures and foundations, performing strength and electrical calculations, and preparing design documents, technical specifications, cost estimates and bills of material associated with the installation of electrical transmission line facilities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity

  • Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities

  • Deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity

  • Conducts engineering and related studies

  • Completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems

  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures, proficient in technical and analytical competencies

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities

  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Maintains accurate records and files

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally

Basic /Required Qualifications - Engineer II

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Basic /Required Qualifications - Engineer III

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program AND/OR current P.E. license.

  • Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Civil engineering degree preferred.

  • Passing grade on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles.

  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing, and presenting recommendations.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Previous experience with transmission line design

  • Experience utilizing PLS-CADD

  • Experience utilizing AutoCad

  • Understanding of the basic principles of project management.

  • Proficient in Microsoft suite skills such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc

  • Experience in the electric utility industry.
