As our Distribution Designer III, you will responsible for the overall supervision of the projects assigned to them and will use prescribed methods, standards and best practices to perform specific and daily assignments designing projects. Incumbent works as part of teams of drafters, designers and engineers working on electric projects such as underground and overhead circuits.

Designers are part of project teams working on electric projects such as power line undergrounding and overhead system hardening to prevent fire in high fire threat districts and other distribution line projects.

This position is based in NV5's San Diego, CA office.

Responsibilities

Other Responsibilities include:

    Use computer-aided drafting tools such as AutoCAD & Civil 3D, CADWorx, Revit, MicroStation, AutoCAD Inventor, Bentley Substation, and/or Solidworks, as well as technical handbooks, utility
    standards, tables, and calculators to create relevant drawings and 3D models of facilities.

  • Research, specify and recommend commercially available equipment.

  • Make major design recommendations as part of a project team, and may participate in client presentations.

  • Calculate costs and time schedules for proposed work.

  • Assign duties and schedules to team members, may be responsible for all phases of a project.

  • Produce sketches and system schematics for complicated design tasks such as layout of mechanical or electrical equipment rooms.

  • Document existing conditions and perform troubleshooting.

  • Develop details as required for a specific project.

  • Edit master specification sections to be project specific.

  • Assist in development of technical competence of project team members.

  • Support project managers in maintaining client relationships.

  • Develop control sequences for temperature control systems.

  • Attend construction progress meetings to solve non-routine technical issues and produce
    reports.

  • Meet client and NV5's requirements and standards.

  • Manage and maintain design records and files.

  • Complete as-built drawings.

  • Start learning how to calculate costs and time schedules for proposed work.

  • Able to fulfill assignments that require independent judgment and evaluation.

  • Some travel to client sites as needed (expected to be no more than 30% of time).

  • Assist in preparation of technical papers for submittal to regional/national publications.

  • Research non-routine code issues and obtain interpretations from code officials.

  • Review addendums, proposal requests, and change orders.

  • Review drawings for compliance with company and industry standards and quality



Qualifications

We are seeking the following qualifications:

  • 7-12 years of AutoCAD, Revit, MicroStation, and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D experience

  • Associate's Degree in Engineering, Architectural or Design Technologies, Mechanical or Electrical Technology or relevant field, or equivalent training and experience.

  • At least 5 years of experience in the design of electric distribution projects in both overhead and underground configurations.

  • Must be able to demonstrate a good understanding of both OH and UG construction, poles, conduits, substructures, cable and wire types, and connections.

  • Background as an electrical designer or planner with SDG&E or other comparable large electric utility. (Preferred).

  • Some knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project. (Preferred).

  • Experience with PLS-CADD or O-Calc overhead design software is strongly preferred for electric distribution roles

The pay range for this California position is $43.00- $60.00 per hour; however, base pay offered may be higher or lower depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience of the candidate. Restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
