Job Summary

The Material Handler is responsible for the safe handling of all incoming and outgoing deliveries & inventory to and from EPA-RTP Facilities while utilizing pallet jacks, hand trucks, carts, and other material handling equipment to complete required tasks. Assists in all delivery instruction, in-house moving functions as instructed by the Dockmaster. Performs excess property pick-ups ensuring physical information matches that of the written instructions. The Material Handler will also function as a backup to the Truck Driver and perform all primary duties and additional responsibilities in their absence.

Primary Duties

  • Safely deliver packages, Store stock orders, mail, material, and equipment to and from all EPA-RTP Facilities using various types of material handling equipment.
  • Assist in loading and unloading all package and equipment deliveries ensuring that all recipient and room information accurately matches delivery sheets prior to delivery.
  • Ensure the safe and timely completion of service calls.
  • Operates pallet jacks, hand trucks, carts, and other material handling equipment in performing material handling and warehousing duties.
  • Assist in cross-training of other departments as instructed by Dockmaster.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Complete mileage and time logs daily when necessary and accurately submit to supervisor.
  • Transport office personnel and visitors as needed.
  • Sign vehicles and keys in and out and being responsible for vehicles that are signed out in your name.
  • Load and unload truck using care not to damage materials. Secure materials, which could shift causing damage. Deliver loads to proper location, maintain delivery and pickup logs documenting all pick-ups and deliveries, obtaining signatures when required.
  • Verify the accuracy of incoming shipments by comparing items and quantities received against bills of lading, invoices, purchase records, manifests, storage receipts, or other records. Check for damaged goods and ensure the goods are appropriately identified, noting and reporting discrepancies and damaged goods, and routing to departments within the establishment.
  • Operate office equipment (e.g., copier, x-ray scanner, barcode scanner, etc.)
  • Read and adhere to all memos and directives of the supervisor.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications: Education, Experience, and Certification(s)

  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) required.
  • Must hold or be able to obtain a National Agency Check and Inquires (NACI) Security background check required.
  • 2-3 years of direct experience in Material Handling / Warehouse Services required.
  • Valid NC driver's license and/or access to reliable transportation to perform work-related travel required. Eligible drivers must have a good motor vehicle record (MVR).
  • One (1) year experience operating a 26' Box Truck at standard loading dock height required.
  • One (1) year experience and knowledge of Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area Roadways preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Well organized, detail oriented, and self-directed individual who is a team player.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must provide excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Basic ability to operate a computer using Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk and sit. The employee must regularly lift and or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 75 pounds or handle 100 pounds or more using material handling equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
