The Department of Mathematics ( https://math.ecu.edu/) offers the BA, BS, and MA degrees in mathematics. As a department, we serve a wide range of students-from those fulfilling their general education requirements to graduate students in mathematics-and are committed to helping all of them reach their mathematical goals. To achieve this, the department administers and staffs several physical spaces, including a large College Algebra Virtual Environment ( CAVE) computer lab, to provide assistance to students. Our department is an active participant in the system-wide Math Pathways initiative ( https://www.utdanacenter.org/our-work/higher-education/dana-center-mathematics-pathways) and is incorporating Learning Assistants into the classroom. ECU Department of Mathematics also provides the leadership and administrative home for North Carolina's Early Mathematics Placement Testing Center ( https://sites.ecu.edu/ncempt/).
Job Duties

East Carolina University invites applications for Director of College Algebra in the Department of Mathematics beginning January 2026. The Director of College Algebra is expected to provide strategic and collaborative leadership in support of student success and mathematics appreciation. Working alongside dozens of permanent and temporary faculty instructing thousands of students per year in the MATH 1065 College Algebra course, the Director of College Algebra will be responsible for utilizing time management and communication skills to coordinate the creation and use of an effective, clear common syllabus, including the use of consistent assessments on a shared platform. Such coordination requires excellent time management and communication skills. The Director is expected to collaborate with other Mathematics faculty to evaluate and assess effective mathematics placement approaches as well as curriculum review and revision to ensure students are prepared for successful advancement in the mathematics curriculum. Further, the Director is expected to partner with other departmental leaders in engaging campus stakeholders (College of Business, College of Nursing, College of Education, and others with high proportions of students taking MATH 1065) and partners (Office for Faculty Excellence, Pirate Academic Success Center, and other offices supporting faculty development and student success) to effectively deliver mathematics education and support.
Student employees are key partners for student success in College Algebra. These employees include Learning Assistants (LAs), Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) and other tutors. The Director of College Algebra is responsible for recruiting, hiring, scheduling, supervising, and mentoring student employees. In conjunction with departmental leadership, the Director of College Algebra is responsible for the assessment of student learning outcomes as required by IPAR and in support of strategic improvement in student success parameters.
To fulfill the combination of duties, the Director of College Algebra is eligible for a 1-course release per term. Additionally, a stipend may be offered subject to salary pre-authorization requirements. Contingent upon availability of funds.
Minimum Education/Experience
A Master's degree in mathematics, mathematics education, or related field, is required, as well as a demonstrated record of effective teaching of mathematics.
