A Brief Overview
Provides leadership of dietetic technicians registered (DTR) who receive, prepare & deliver specialty formula and modified human milk and supplies in support of patient care.

Supports selection, on-boarding, training and performance management of staff. Leads by example in creating culture of engagement; service excellence; safe preparation and handling of formula human milk following aseptic technique and adherence to regulatory, hospital and departmental policies and standards.

Achieves consistent accountability of performance across all team members with timely coaching for development and continuous improvement.

Provides effective communication with peers and managers to achieve coordination across shifts and to ensure consistent positive experience for patients, families and staff who receive human milk and formula products and services.

Exercises sound judgement in problem solving operational needs and to achieve continuous quality and service improvements.

What you will do

  • Supports scheduling and coverage of shifts for call outs and for fluctuations in service volumes. Provides guidance on distribution of work to assure efficient and safe processing of daily orders.
  • Supervises technician staff assigned to preparation and timely delivery of nutrition supplies including formula (infant, adolescent, metabolic and other ready-to-feed formula preparations) and human milk (fortified, donor, skimmed).
  • Communicates with manager, ordering clinician and/or Registered Dietitians (RD) regarding patient formula and/or human milk orders that require clarification or substitution.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
  • Accountable for maintenance of infection prevention standards of both the work area and in the performance of staff task assignments.
  • Maintain food safety & sanitation standards at all times. Ensures technician staff follows requirements for sealing, labeling, dating and proper storage of all products. Rotates product on a FIFO (first in : first out) basis and promptly removes any identified expired product from inventory/service.
  • Consistently utilizes, and models, Safety Behaviors for Error Prevention.
  • Ensures maintenance of records including, but not limited to: dish machine temperatures; eye wash check; donor human milk logs; scheduled cleaning; audits; data bases; etc.
  • Participates in department quality control activities including, but not limited to: order calculation accuracy; formula expiration audits; EOC rounds; etc.
  • Assists with ordering, inventory and receiving of formula, related supplies and equipment to maintain appropriate stock levels. Removes damaged formula cans and outdated formula/human milk stock from inventory.
  • Leads and/or actively participates in team meetings and projects.
  • Immediately reports and documents unsafe conditions and/or faulty equipment to manager and escalates appropriately.
  • Reports all work related accidents/injury to manager as soon as the event occurs and completes required documentation.
  • Adheres to proper equipment handling and safe lifting, pushing and pulling techniques.
  • Consistently follows CHOP Service Standards to create an environment in which families, patients, and staff feel welcomed, respected and confident in receiving the highest level of care and service.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Training and Education:
  • Completes 100% of assigned training to satisfy CHOP Mandatory; regulatory and departmental required training.
  • Ensures competency of technicians by checking in throughout new hire training, monthly formula bacteria check and annual competency.

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED - Required
  • Associate's Degree Nutrition or similar field of study - Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • At least four (4) years experience in performing formula and/or human milk processes/preparation - Preferred
  • At least one (1) year Leadership experience in related field - Preferred

  • Management and leadership skills in addition to good planning and organization skills. (Preferred proficiency)

Licenses and Certifications

  • Serv Safe Certification (SSC) - National Restaurant Association (NRA) - - Preferred
  • Dietetic Technician-Registered (DTR) - Commission on Dietetic Registration - - Preferred
