Overview

ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB's Virginia Beach office is seeking a Geomatics Equipment Operator to join our collabroative team in our Virginia Beach, VA, Cleveland Street office. This individual will provide support to the Geomatics team in the collection of field data and information related to the preparation of survey maps and CAD files.

Responsibilities

    Under direct supervision, performs various routine surveying tasks, including but not limited to: (e.g., operation, transport and setup of Total Stations, data collectors, GPS, terrestrial scanners, single beam fathometers, multibeam hydrographic systems other surveying equipment). in connection with hydrographic, topographic, boundary, beach monitoring, construction layout, and crane rail surveys.
  • Assists the field crew in collecting hydrographic and topographic data.
  • Performs land surveying using conventional survey methods.
  • Performs construction stakeout of proposed improvements (e.g., installation of stakes using sledgehammers and hand tools).
  • Gain exposure to single beam and multibeam hydrographic survey technologies and HYPACK software.
  • Assist the crew in performing crane rail surveys.
  • Assist with office tasks including, but not limited to CAD drafting, data download, deed and map research, and filing.
  • Responsible for inspecting, testing, adjusting, repairing, and overall evaluation of electronic and mechanical instruments. Ensures that inspecting standards and guidelines are followed.
  • Maintains proper care of all equipment and vehicles.
  • Loads, unloads, and operates equipment. Navigates and traverses' off-site locations with various weather conditions and terrains to transport equipment.
  • Performs reconnaissance and recovery of boundary markers through use of hand tools and digging.
  • Performs manual labor using a variety of tools to prepare equipment for setup and usage (e.g., digs with shovel, cuts, and removes brush and undergrowth for line of sight).
  • Assists in field search of evidence of boundary and easement lines.
  • Assists in collecting supplemental survey data and structural elements.
  • Documents all phases of survey work through clear field notes and data collection.
  • Participates in professional and personal development aligned with career goals.
  • Performs all job functions in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations and VHB policies and procedures.

Skills and Attributes

  • Ability to operate company vehicles, including large cargo vans. Knowledge of towing a boat is a plus!
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Team-oriented with capability to work independently.
  • Ability to identify and seek needed information.
  • Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Skills and knowledge must be commensurate with required experience and job level.

Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma, Associates degree preferred
  • 0-1 years of land surveying experience
  • Must be detail oriented, willing to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to outdoor elements and willing to travel
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs

Work Environment

Frequent travel to locations with various weather conditions and terrains. Long hours of field work requiring ability to move (e.g., walk/hike) and lift equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds
