Job Summary

Employment Duration: 2.5 months

The Senior Custodian is responsible for providing a clean, safe, and sanitary environment within assigned areas of the medical center. Under the direction of a Custodial Supervisor, Lead Custodian, or Facilities & Safety Manager, this role performs cleaning, floor care, waste/linen collection, supply maintenance, and other duties essential to maintaining hospital standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Collection & Disposal of Solid Waste and Soiled Linen

  • Follow Infection Control Policies.
  • Empty and clean waste receptacles; replace liners.
  • Collect and transport infectious and non-infectious waste.
  • Transport soiled linen from patient care areas using appropriate equipment.
  • Use tilt trucks and hand trucks for waste transport and disposal.

Floor Care

  • Sweep, dust mop, wet mop, and spot mop hard floors.
  • Vacuum and spot clean carpets in patient and non-patient areas.
  • Strip, scrub, seal, and finish floors.
  • Shampoo carpets, upholstery, and furniture.
  • Operate powered cleaning equipment (polishers, scrubbers, burnishers, steam cleaners, extractors, etc.).

General Cleaning

  • Clean and/or dust furniture, fixtures, equipment, and surfaces across clinical and non-clinical areas.
  • Sanitize restrooms, showers, tubs, sinks, mirrors, dispensers, vents, blinds, and additional fixtures.
  • Use ladders or step stools as required for high-level cleaning.
  • Perform patient discharge cleaning when assigned, including cleaning beds, gurneys, chart racks, and equipment.

Supplies & Equipment

  • Requisition paper goods, soap, chemicals, shampoo, wax, mop heads, and floor pads.
  • Follow safety guidelines when mixing cleaning solutions.
  • Maintain supply closets with labeled materials.
  • Refill spray bottles and dispensers as needed.

Other Duties

  • Perform duties assigned by supervisor based on operational needs.
  • Clean medication storage areas after completing required competency.
  • Move beds and lightweight furniture as needed.
  • Maintain security of assigned areas and report hazards, damage, or unauthorized presence.
  • Respond to emergencies such as floods, fires, or disasters.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Six months of experience in hospital, hotel, or industrial janitorial cleaning.
  • Ability to read, write, and follow oral/written instructions.
  • Ability to meet physical job demands, including standing/walking most of the day; lifting up to 50 lbs; and moving equipment.
  • Ability to follow established cleaning procedures and safety standards.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and floor-care equipment.
  • Ability to work any area or shift, including weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Excellent attendance, reliability, and ability to maintain positive working relationships.
  • Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

Preferred Qualifications


  • One year of custodial experience in a hospital, hotel, or industrial environment.
  • Completion of basic custodial training (preferred but not required).
