The Dremel lab in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology in the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to investigate the molecular genetics of herpesviruses. The Dremel laboratory uses diverse approaches - molecular virology, RNA biology, high throughput sequencing & bioinformatics - to understand how viruses rewire core host machinery to promote infection. Ongoing projects are focused on human herpesviruses including Herpes Simplex Virus-1 (HSV-1) and Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV). The successful applicant will be part of a multidisciplinary team investigating how herpesviruses manipulate the RNA landscape with a focus on factors which influence synthesis, maturation, and function. The ideal candidates will have a PhD with experience in relevant areas of biology, first-author publication(s), experience or willingness to utilize cell culture models of infection, as well as the ability to work well in a highly interactive, creative, and collaborative environment. Additional duties include participating in research conferences within the lab and with collaborators, leading the preparation of figures and draft text for publications and grant applications, and contributing to lab-wide research support activities in a collaborative manner. Salary will be offered in alignment with current NIH postdoctoral salary guidelines, with fringe benefits as offered by UVA HR. The Dremel lab prioritizes mentorship, collaboration, and ethical, rigorously conducted research that benefits humankind (www.dremel-lab.com). We welcome scientifically creative individuals who can lead their own research questions and work effectively in teams within the lab. The Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology is a highly interdisciplinary environment with an outstanding commitment to research and education (https://mic.med.virginia.edu/). Candidates will be immersed in the robust intellectual environment offered by the Department, the Center for RNA Science and Medicine, and UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center. Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University.
