Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC) is an accredited on-campus mental health facility dedicated to supporting the well-being of UT Austin students. CMHC offers a range of services, including assessment and referral, group and individual counseling, psychiatry and well-being services.

University Health Services (UHS) is an accredited on-campus medical facility dedicated to addressing the varied healthcare needs of UT Austin students. UHS provides comprehensive services, including general medical care, public health education and specialty clinics.

The Longhorn Wellness Center is the health promotion unit servicing University Health Services and Counseling and Mental Health Center. Staff focuses on educating students about priority college health issues by hosting workshops and events, creating new tools, and collaborating with the campus community to enhance overall well-being.

Purpose

The Counseling and Mental Health Center is seeking to fill up to three (3) positions to provide high-quality single sessions, triage, crisis intervention, case management, and short-term individual counseling services to undergraduate and graduate students. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a dynamic, open, and flexible mindset, ready to meet the evolving needs of college students, understanding their unique challenges and providing support tailored to their academic and personal development needs. This role involves assessing immediate concerns, delivering effective short-term support, and facilitating ongoing care as needed. It also requires participation in a multidisciplinary clinical team and collaboration with university departments and organizations. The positions will be located in the William C Powers Student Activity Center (WCP).

Responsibilities
  • Single Session Counseling: Deliver focused, solution-oriented counseling sessions designed to address immediate client needs and empower individuals with actionable steps.
  • Triage Services: Conduct initial assessments to determine the urgency of client needs, prioritize care, and make appropriate referrals to other services as necessary.
  • Crisis Intervention: Provide rapid, compassionate responses to clients experiencing acute distress or crises, ensuring safety and stability while implementing evidence-based de-escalation strategies.
  • Case Management: Coordinate ongoing support and resources for students by assessing needs, developing individualized care plans, and connecting clients to internal and external services.
  • Individual Counseling: Offer short-term therapeutic support tailored to individual client goals, fostering personal growth and resilience.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, community resources, and support networks to coordinate comprehensive care for clients.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential records of client interactions, assessments, interventions, and follow-up plans.
  • Continuous Learning: Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in mental health care, crisis intervention, and culturally responsive services.
Required Qualifications
  • Licensed to practice independently as a Clinical Social Worker, Professional Counselor or Psychologist in Texas or if licensed in another state able to obtain licensure in Texas within one (1) year.
  • Must meet educational requirements to obtain and hold applicable licensure in Texas.
  • Demonstrated experience in crisis intervention, triage, single session, or brief counseling settings to college students and young adults.
  • Ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinicians.
  • Ability to work effectively with campus personnel, such as professionals in academic affairs and other student services providers.
  • Ability to work within a large system, and to participate and collaborate effectively in a large mental health services agency.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure or rapidly changing situations
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a college/university counseling center or outpatient mental health setting.
  • Two (2) years of experience in providing clinical services to college students.
  • Training and experience in clinical supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinicians.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with campus personnel, such as professionals in academic affairs and other student services providers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a large system, and to participate and collaborate effectively in a large mental health services agency.
Salary Range

LPC/LCSW: $78,000 + depending on qualifications

Psychologist: $90,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

Retirement Plan Eligibility:
