INTRO:

·         Lead with purpose…bring your whole self to the job.

·         Strategic Partner with the President to shape the financial future of one of America’s most mission-driven and respected universities, USF.

·         Chance to make a difference at USF…and in the future of higher education.

ROLE:

The University of San Francisco (USF) invites accomplished financial leaders to consider serving as its next Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) — a pivotal executive role reporting directly to the President and serving as a key member of the President’s Cabinet.

As the University’s senior financial officer, the CFO will be both a strategic partner and trusted advisor, guiding USF’s financial strategy to ensure institutional stability, innovation, and mission alignment. This is a rare opportunity to lead within a prestigious, Jesuit Catholic university—nationally ranked among the top 100 and recognized for its diversity, ethical leadership, and transformative education.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

The CFO oversees all aspects of USF’s financial management, including:

  • Strategic planning, budgeting, and forecasting
  • Endowment and investment management
  • Capital planning, real estate, and facilities oversight
  • Treasury and debt portfolio management
  • Financial reporting, compliance, and risk management

The ideal candidate will bring a proven record of executive financial leadership in a complex organization—preferably in higher education, mission-driven nonprofits, or similarly regulated sectors. They will combine technical financial acumen with exceptional communication, collaboration, and ethical stewardship.

WHY USF:

  • Prestige and Purpose: USF is San Francisco’s first university, with a $600M endowment, $510M operating budget, and 8,000 students. Its Jesuit Catholic mission inspires a commitment to “Change the World From Here.
  • Strategic Partnership: The CFO works in close collaboration with the President and Provost, shaping decisions that balance academic excellence, financial strength, and social impact.
  • Innovation and Impact: Situated in the heart of the Bay Area, USF embraces innovation and technology—including the ethical use of AI—to enhance student success and institutional resilience.
  • Vibrant, Values-Based Community: Consistently ranked among the top 10 universities for diversity and top 15 for law education, USF’s culture blends entrepreneurial agility with deep ethical grounding.
  • Mission-Driven Leadership: The CFO will advance a faith-based vision that integrates financial discipline with Jesuit values of discernment, service, diversity, and care for the whole person (cura personalis).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Senior financial leadership experience in higher education, large nonprofit, or corporate environments.
  • Expertise in strategic planning, investment management, and capital budgeting.
  • Strong communication and collaborative leadership skills.
  • Commitment to ethical stewardship and Jesuit mission values.

COMPENSATION: $350,000–$400,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
