Tenure Track Assistant Professor specializing in Geomatics

UMSL Geospatial Collaborative

The UMSL Geospatial Collaborative invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Geomatics. This 9-month appointment will be housed in the Department of Mathematics, Physics, Astronomy, and Statistics, with teaching, research, and service responsibilities directed by the Director of the UMSL Geospatial Collaborative. The faculty member's performance in teaching, research, and service will be evaluated by the Director of the UMSL Geospatial Collaborative to ensure consistency with the Geospatial Collaborative's mission and strategic objectives. The successful candidate will contribute to UMSL's mission by balancing excellence in teaching, research, and service, with specific responsibilities that include developing new Geomatics curricula, spearheading the creation of a Certificate in Geomatics, building a nationally recognized research program supported by external funding, and mentoring students to become the next generation of geospatial scientists.

Responsibilities

Teaching: Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in geomatics (e.g., GNSS/geodesy, surveying, photogrammetry, LiDAR, remote sensing, geospatial data analytics, and Geospatial Artificial Intelligence/GeoAI), using project-based and experiential learning approaches to align with current best practices. Contribute to curriculum development, student advising, and mentoring.

Research: Establish an externally funded research program in geomatics; publish in peer-reviewed journals; mentor graduate students; and build collaborative research projects across UMSL and with our partner institutions.

Service: Provide service to the UMSL Geospatial Collaborative, university, and profession, including committee participation, program development, peer review, and leadership in relevant professional organizations.

This position supports a project funded by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, which limits participation in the project to citizens of the United States. As a result, only U.S. citizens are eligible for this position.

Required:
* Ph.D. in Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Geospatial Engineering, or a closely related field (completed by the start date).
* Demonstrated teaching experience in geomatics or closely related courses.
* Evidence of research productivity through peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and other scholarly outputs.
* Evidence of potential to secure external funding for research.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred:
* A record of securing external funding.
* Professional certification or licensure (e.g., Professional Land Surveyor, Professional Engineer, Certified Photogrammetrist).
* Experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate students and leading interdisciplinary research teams.
* Interest or experience in curriculum innovation, including advanced geomatics topics such as GNSS/geodesy, photogrammetry, LiDAR/remote sensing, geospatial data analytics, and GeoAI.
