Job Location Raleigh, NC
Department Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences
About the Department
North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary Medicine (NC State CVM) is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians, veterinarian scientists, and biomedical scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through
entire ecosystems.

The Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences at the NC State CVM trains veterinarians, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows in research-based careers focused on discovering new information about animal and human health and disease and using those findings to enhance animal and human health and wellbeing.

The Van Landeghem lab explores how adult multipotent intestinal stem cells are controlled by signals emanating from their microenvironment in health and diseases. We especially focus on cues derived from local neural cells that belong to the enteric nervous system, also called the second brain. We also study how nutritional disorders and nutritional interventions during development and adulthood affect intestinal stem cells and their communication with cells of the enteric nervous system. Our lab routinely uses cell culture (primary and cell lines), fluorescence-activating cell sorting and flow cytometry, transgenic mouse models (stem cell-reporter and knock out models and immunodeficient models), microdissection (layers of the gut wall), immunofluorescence (wholemount, sections and 2D cultures), microscopy (fluorescence, confocal, real time, light sheet), biochemistry (westernblot, ELISA) and molecular biology (RT-qPCR, siRNA/shRNA) techniques.

Essential Job Duties
The Research Assistant will be a key contributor to the lab's efforts to uncover the biological processes that drive gastrointestinal research. This role offers the opportunity to take an active role in experimental discovery-working directly with research animals, primary cell cultures, and cell lines to test defined hypotheses and generate meaningful data.
You will get to partner closely with the Principal Investigator and fellow researchers, to apply techniques in histology, microscopy, molecular biology, and biochemistry to advance the lab's objectives. Beyond bench work, you will also support daily lab operations by maintaining supplies and equipment, managing accurate research records, and assisting in the preparation of manuscripts and presentations that share the team's findings with the broader scientific community.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct experiments involving research animals (primarily mice), primary cell cultures, and established cell lines.
  • Perform laboratory techniques including histology, microdissection, microscopy, molecular biology, and biochemistry.
  • Participate in animal care activities (primarily mice), including collection of blood and tissue samples.
  • Maintain accurate research records, organize and manage experimental data, and assist with preparation of publications and presentations.
  • Support laboratory management by maintaining inventories, equipment, and supplies, and contributing to process improvements and daily organization.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members while managing multiple concurrent projects.

This role is well suited for someone who values hands-on experimentation, scientific rigor, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in advancing biological research. If you are motivated by discovery, take pride in precision, and enjoy contributing to a collaborative research environment, we encourage you to apply.
Other Responsibilities
In addition to the core responsibilities of this role, there may be occasional opportunities to take on additional duties. This offers an opportunity to build on your skills, explore new areas, and gain a deeper understanding of the department's operations.
