Job Summary

UCSF and the UC Berkeley-UCSF Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) seek an experienced project manager who will provide critical programmatic management support for a unique academic-industry alliance centered around designing, testing, manufacturing, and advancing through clinical trial a next-generation gene-editing-based system for in vivo CAR-T engineering at ultra-low costs to cure difficult cancers. The position will report to the key academic PIs at UCSF and UC Berkeley and liaise closely with academic co-investigators, Danaher Operating Companies, and the federal sponsors. Primary responsibilities will be for project management duties to enable execution and harmonization across all program efforts (including a range of administrative workstreams) and ensuring timely progress toward milestones. The person hired will develop and maintain an operational infrastructure that enables cross-institutional collaboration between project leads at UCSF, UC Berkeley, Stanford, Ohio State, and key contributors at multiple Danaher Operating Companies such as Cytiva, IDT, Aldevron, and others. They will also be responsible for assisting preparing timely financial and compliance reporting to federal agencies.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to budgeting research projects, facilitating coordination among participating partners, fostering team science and collaborations, facilitating timely sharing of ideas and data, and tracking all programmatic goals. The ideal candidate should be independent, a creative problem solver, and original thinker, and share the collective motivation to advance science and human health. A scientific research record is also essential, ideally including prior evidence of experience in scientific writing and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Prior project management experience is essential with excellent management skills, and prior experience with federal compliance reporting is preferred. Applicants will have strong written, verbal, and presentation skills and an ability to communicate and work in an interdisciplinary team environment.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $87,900 - $187,700 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department in the School of Medicine (SOM) at UCSF. The mission of the Department is research, education, patient care and public service. The Department has more than 750 full-time faculty at four sites - UCSF Health, Veteran's Administration Medical Center, San Francisco General Hospital, and UCSF Fresno - and approximately 60 divisions. Central Administration at the Parnassus sites is responsible for directing the administrative functions of the Department via its sites and divisions, including the provision of research administration services for its faculty.

The Division of Infectious Diseases consists of 120 faculty, fellows, and staff whose work is grounded in deep commitment the highest standards of clinical care and teaching, as well as, research leading to new approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious diseases. The Division of Infectious Diseases employs and trains leaders in academic, superb clinical researcher scientists and basic scientists, and outstanding clinicians. Our faculty are leading experts in adult infectious diseases.

Required Qualifications


  • MS or PhD in Biological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, or related area, and/or equivalent experience / training
  • 2+ years of project coordination or management experience in the biomedical area
  • In-depth academic background and experience in selected area of research including record of publications in related field(s) required
  • Advanced program planning and project management skills
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills. Advanced skills analyzing information, problems, situations, policies or procedures to define the problem, need or objective
  • Proven ability to formulate solutions, new program development, alternative choices and implications for implementation
  • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers, managers and teams
  • Demonstrated success in managing research funding

Preferred Qualifications


  • Broad knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs
  • Community outreach, service to your profession, service to your institution
  • Experience teaching, mentoring, and advising students and trainees
  • Management experience in an academic setting
  • Reporting experience with federal contracts
