Department Summary:

The Statewide IPM Program is a part of the Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The unit administers a program in integrated pest management research and extension, including a team of Cooperative Extension Advisors, an Urban and Community IPM team, a Communications team, an IT/Production team, and Pesticide Safety Education Program. The Program supports research and extension in agricultural and urban IPM. The IT unit manages thousands of web pages with IPM information; several pest-management-related databases, and interactive IPM decision-support tools. Position Summary:

This position is part of the UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program (UC IPM) Communications Team, which works closely with other units in UC IPM, including the Urban and Community IPM team, Pesticide Safety and Education Program, and IT/Production Team. Working with UC ANR, industry, and agency experts, the Writer Editor develops and produces a wide range of informational products about integrated pest management (IPM) for pest management practitioners across California. These products are distributed in print or online and are prepared as part of a series or as stand-alone products.

Under the direction of the Content Development Supervisor, the employee will write, edit, review, and coordinate the development and production of IPM extension publications, multimedia communication products, and web-based tools. The Writer Editor 3 will also write clear, accurate content explaining IPM strategies based on expert input, select appropriate visuals to describe IPM methods, organize and facilitate meetings with stakeholders, coordinate expert reviews and evaluate project products, and travel occasionally throughout the state to participate in training events and collaborate with subject matter experts.

This position is a career appointment that is 100% fixed.

Home Office Location - The selected candidate may choose a location at one of the UCCE County Offices across the state (https://ucanr.edu/counties), contingent upon space availability and approval of the County Director.

The home department is the Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program. While this position is normally based at Davis, CA (or the selected UCCE County Office location), this position is eligible for hybrid flexible work arrangements, for applicants living in the State of California, at this time. Please note that hybrid flexible work arrangements are subject to change by the University.

Pay Scale: $66,500/year to $92,400/year (salary pay scale based on Davis location)

Researches, Writes, & Develops Extension Products that Describe IPM Methods and Lead to IPM Adoption

* Coordinates the development and maintenance of extension publications and products (Pest Management Guidelines, including year-round IPM programs and general information pages, online galleries, identification cards, online tutorials, instructional videos, and online training).

* Gathers, edits, and writes new information or revises existing information for extension publications and products using written research and communicating with scientists. Researches and compiles visuals: images, line drawings, photographs, graphs, tables. Assures that selected visuals have appropriate permissions for UC IPM use. Consults with users for improvement feedback.

* Data entry to support the UC IPM website.

* Coordinates publication and product release with the production team.

* Coordinates the IPM review process with ANR experts.

* Identifies improvements for communicating scientific information, using suitable language levels, presentation, illustrations, etc., for multiple audiences. Identifies and resolves accessibility barriers to ensure that UC IPM communication products meet ADA accessibility standards.

* Identifies and responds flexibly to the different needs of various clientele.

* Accessibility updates to the website, product evaluation, promotional written material, including social media, webinar hosting, instructional video production, closed captioning correction, and online course development.

Remain Up-to-Date on the Latest Pest Management Research

* Reviews pest management scientific literature. Attends workgroup or other professional meetings to maintain knowledge of changing or new pest management methods and emerging pest problems.

Participate in UC IPM Program Improvement:

* Contributes to UC IPM Program planning and projects: reviews materials, makes suggestions, promotes products, and conducts analyses for UC IPM program efforts.

* Actively participates in professional development and training opportunities to strengthen skills related to effective communication, collaboration, and inclusive access to programs and services. Applies knowledge gained from training to help ensure that programs, policies, and processes are fair, accessible, and beneficial to all participants and stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Thorough knowledge of biology.
  • Experience in writing, editing, and proofreading documents for content appropriateness, logic, clarity, accuracy, grammar, syntax, punctuation, and ability to conform to the UC IPM style and format.
  • Ability to understand and interpret research results and seek further information. Investigative skills to ask pertinent questions, absorb and discuss technical information in a broad range of subjects, and identify and review appropriate sources for specific information.
  • Project management, organizational skills, problem recognition, conflict prevention and resolution abilities, and experience prioritizing tasks and effectively working on multiple projects without loss of accuracy.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills, including active listening, to effectively interact with a diversity of people with a wide range of experiences and backgrounds. Skills to work effectively as part of a team in a collaborative manner to meet and exceed unit goals and provide input on the direction of the program.
  • Ability to provide good customer service and respond productively to clientele (e.g., authors, cooperative extension specialists, advisors, UC IPM staff, and supervisors) needs.
  • Proficiency operating computer, using MS Office, and image editing software such as the Adobe Creative Cloud suite.
  • Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • Master's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Skills to evaluate scientific information for validity and applicability, detect data gaps, and resolve information conflicts. Skills to solve problems and make sound decisions. Ability to identify and analyze problems and possible alternatives for accomplishing tasks.
  • Knowledge of plant biology and pest management sciences, including biology and management of arthropod, weed, pathogen, and vertebrate pests, and pesticide nomenclature, classification, and toxicology.
  • Knowledge of California agriculture and natural resources.
  • Knowledge of computer applications for publishing, image handling, and / or web production and web-based collaborative tools such as Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, or Asana.
  • Knowledge of resources for information related to pests and pest management.
  • Experience editing and writing how-to publications on technical subjects for technical and general public end user audiences. Skill to summarize and communicate technical information.
  • Experience executing a social media strategy and developing engaging content for social media platforms.
  • Ability to respond constructively and openly to critiques and work with others to resolve conflicting viewpoints.
  • Ability to identify opportunities to increase program access and participation in areas or populations that have not been historically well served. Ability to develop and implement outreach strategies that enhance awareness, trust, and long-term engagement across diverse communities.
  • Skill to take and edit digital photographs and videos.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Travel including travel outside normal business hours may be requested. Travel occasionally throughout the state.
  • Must possess valid California Driver's License to drive a County or University vehicle. Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability damage insurance on vehicle used is required. Reimbursement of job-related travel will be reimbursed according to University policies.
