Description
Summary: The Patient Safety Technician provides supervision of patients who require continuous observation. The PST is to ensure the patient's safety and well-being, while providing continuous patient observation, interaction, and role modeling to patients, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. While performing these specific duties, the PST must provide appropriate crisis intervention as necessary by anticipating and responding quickly to escalating behaviors, utilizing de-escalation techniques to diffuse violent situations, and correctly prioritizing safety concerns. Responsibilities: Under the direction of a licensed professional, provide sitter services for the patient who requires continuous observation. The individual in this position watches over the patient and ensures that they are in a safe environment at all times. The PST will report to the nurse or charge nurse should the patient try to get out of bed, pull on their tubes, or display other behavior that may cause harm to themselves or others. Suicide and high-risk patients may not be left unattended at any time. The PST must have the ability to maintain appropriate precautions for suicidal patients as indicated in the Suicide or Self-Harm Patient Care Policy. In addition, the PST must communicate with the patient care team by getting a report regarding the patient's condition and plan of care before the beginning of the shift and providing a report before leaving the assigned patient. The PST may accompany the patient while off the floor for procedures under the direction of a licensed professional and may not take the patient to smoke, to the cafeteria, or to the gift shop.
