Essential Job Duties
NC State University's New Student Programs Assistant Director provides leadership in utilizing innovative best practices in the planning and implementation of events related to the orientation and transition of new undergraduate NC State students, including primary responsibility for New Student and Family Orientation programs and the recruitment of graduate student interns. Integral in these efforts is collaboration with campus partners, such as the Division of Academic and Student Affairs ( DASA), academic units, the Office of Equal Opportunity ( OED), and Enrollment Management and Services ( EMAS) to aid students in their transition into and through NC State. In addition, the Assistant Director will support departmental initiatives that support the success of new undergraduate NC State students.
The Assistant Director of New Student Programs is responsible for the following:

  • Planning and managing the logistics of comprehensive New Student and Family Orientation programs including fall and spring orientation sessions for first-year and transfer students and families
  • Developing outcomes and content of Orientation presentations and activities with campus presenters, which may include presenting on behalf of the office or university
  • Coordinating program logistics with departmental staff and campus partners, including Campus Enterprises, the Office of International Services, and the Division of Academic and Student Affairs
  • Collaborating with campus partners to orient special populations, including international students, summer school students, and transfer pathways participants
  • Recruiting, selecting and training Student Coordinator team (returning Orientation student staff members)
  • Supervising graduate and co-supervising undergraduate student staff for Orientation programs
  • Assisting in the selection and training of New Student Programs undergraduate student staff
  • Collaborating with the Administrative Support Specialist on orientation registration systems and tracking progress
  • Coordinating the assessment of new student and family orientation programs and activities, such as student staff evaluations
  • Collaborating with the Assistant Director on communication efforts in relation to Orientation programs, including printed materials, websites, mobile guides and email communications


As a member of the New Student Programs team, each staff member is expected to:

  • Support department and university programming to assist students in their transition and success, such as admitted and confirmed student events, Welcome Weeks programs, and the Common Experience, among others
  • Assist with general office customer service, including phone, email and texting support
  • Engage in a practice of ongoing assessment of programs and initiatives in conjunction with New Student Programs staff
  • Serve as a liaison to campus committees and representing office at regional or national conferences
  • Work some required evenings and weekends with longer hours during peak programming

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs administration, or similar field
  • Two to five years related experience working with college students

Other Required Qualifications

  • Experience with the development and implementation of orientation activities
  • Demonstrated use of innovative ideas in programming for college students
  • Experience in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with fellow staff members and campus partners
  • Experience in aligning programmatic outcomes with campus partners related to presentation content, delivery, and messaging in orientation activities
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising, selecting and training graduate and undergraduate student staff
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a highly collaborative team of professionals and student leaders
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, facilitation, and writing skills
  • Theoretical and practical understanding of student development
