Automation and Controls Engineer

Description

The Junior Automation Controls Engineer will primarily focus on supporting products manufactured in the High Point facility. This role involves providing highly-skilled technical support for industrial machinery problem diagnostics, commissioning new automation and its control systems, and supporting repair operations. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with complex PLCs, HMIs, motors, drives, control systems, safety devices/circuits, and automation hardware/software. Additionally, the ideal candidate in this position will be required to assist in field service activities, design engineering functions, and related factory production processes.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Timely response to troubleshooting requests from the manufacturing floor and external parties to diagnose, repair, and update automation control systems.
  • Modify and update PLC and HMI programs to support system upgrades, repairs, or customer-requested changes.
  • Assist with designing, installing, commissioning, and start-up of new automation equipment at Amada facilities or customer sites.
  • Provide in-person factory, remote, and occasional work site technical support, training, and guidance for Amada manufacturing staff, field service technicians, and/or customer staff.
  • Document support activities, including test results, system changes, and recommended improvements.
  • Work closely with multiple engineering groups to gather system specifications, communicate regarding system information and updates, understand field issues, and relay in-house, field, or customer feedback.
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures and customer site requirements during all activities.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES



  • Prefer 2 years of experience in a control engineering position and/or multiple years of experience as a high-level control technician.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in industrial automation, field service of automated machinery, or a closely related technical role.
  • Highly proficient in troubleshooting PLC-based control systems (Omron, Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar).
  • Experience with industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control system drawings.
  • Skilled with test instruments such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and signal generators.
  • Experience with VFDs, servo drives, motion control systems, and sensors.
  • Knowledge of industrial safety regulations and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Experience with ladder logic, function blocks, structured text, and/or sequential function charts.
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems and industrial HMIs is a plus.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot electro-mechanical systems.
  • Excellent in the ability to define problems, establish facts, and draw conclusions. Excellent problem-solving and data analysis skills.
  • Ability to work independently in the factory or field with minimal supervision.
  • Experience in creating schematics, flowcharts, and other electrical design documentation primarily using AutoCAD Electrical and/or SolidWorks.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills (verbal and written), highly organized, and detail-oriented.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).


EDUCATION



  • Preference will be given to candidates with an associate's degree in Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, or Automation Technology. Equivalent technical training and experience may substitute.


TRAVEL



  • Infrequent travel may be required during machine development, debugging, servicing, and training activities.

WORKING CONDITIONS



  • Pay Range: $75,000-$85,000.
  • Requires the ability to frequently stand, stoop, reach, climb, and work in tight areas.
  • May be required to lift up to 25 lbs. on a daily basis.
  • May be occasionally required to work in hot/humid or cold environments out in the field.
