Position: Internal Auditor Industry: Healthcare and Higher Education Location: Durham, NC (4 days on-site; Fridays remote) Overview This is a highly operational internal audit role within a large, private institution. The Internal Auditor will lead and support audits and compliance reviews across various functional areas, focusing on risk, internal controls, and process improvement. Role Highlights Strong benefits package including retirement contributions and childcare support Consistent 40-hour work weeks with excellent work-life balance Exposure to leadership and unique cross-functional projects Fast-paced, growth-oriented environment with continuous learning Opportunity to contribute to both healthcare and academic operations Collaborative team culture with access to modern tools including Power BI and CoPilot Key Responsibilities Plan and perform independent, objective audit and advisory engagements based on risk assessment and project milestones Conduct operational, financial, compliance, and IT assessments to evaluate business processes and systems for efficiency, effectiveness, and accuracy Compile findings and prepare written reports with recommendations for senior leadership; follow up to ensure appropriate action is taken Examine records and conduct interviews to evaluate internal controls, business process design, and compliance with policies and regulations Lead engagement planning, fieldwork, documentation, and reporting Develop recommendations to address identified issues Participate in advisory engagements focused on risk assessment, root cause analysis, performance metrics, and process design Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Economics, MIS, or related field; advanced degree preferred CPA, CIA, CRA, CCRP, or other relevant certification strongly preferred 4+ years of experience in auditing, accounting, or financial operations, including engagement planning and delivery Experience in public accounting or professional services preferred Strong business acumen, analytical skills, and relationship management abilities Comfortable working in dynamic environments with evolving processes Technical Skills Business process documentation Risk and control identification Data collection and analysis Workpaper documentation Problem-solving tools and techniques Project management Interpersonal Skills Purpose-driven and supportive of institutional values Strong communication and influence skills Team-oriented leadership Adaptability and change management Diplomacy and conflict resolution Vaco by Highspring values a diverse workplace and strongly encourages women, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, members of ethnic minorities, foreign-born residents, and veterans to apply.
