Job Description

Span of Control:


The Technical Specialist completes assigned tasks supporting the technical services, quality control, product development, and laboratory operation functions of the company. This position requires excellent organizational and time management skills, attention to detail, and the capacity to self-manage task order within departmental priorities. The successful candidate will enjoy working independently and demonstrating the principles of accountability, confidentiality, and professionalism.



Major Job Function:


Participate in identifying and defining daily and weekly task sets associated with current projects and needs and then completing these tasks within the planned timeline and in order of priority.




General Description:


The Technical Specialist's primary role is supporting the product development and materials control functions within the Technical Services Department, with secondary responsibilities in the quality control and laboratory operations functions.

Work Schedule:


Regular company operating hours of 7:00am - 3:30pm, Monday through Friday. Individual schedules may have flexibility according to the needs of the business and at the discretion of the department manager.



Need for Supervision:


The Technical Specialist works closely and routinely with their manager, supervisor(s), and other functions within the company to identify tasks and determine priorities. Once the task sets and timelines are established, the Technical Specialist is expected to complete their work largely independent of direct and immediate supervision. Management support is always available to any employee. However, outside of planned meetings or scheduled work sessions, employees are primarily responsibility for seeking direction, clarification, or assistance when needed.



Education/ Experience:


Bachelor's degree in chemistry, lab science, or a closely related field. Candidates otherwise well-qualified with relevant experience may be considered.



Language Skills:


Ability to read and interpret technical documents and work instructions, including flow charts, instruction manuals, laboratory methods, charts, diagrams, and data sets.



Mathematical Skills:


Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute and interpret basic statistical functions, including min, max, average, rate, ratio, and percent, as well as draw and interpret bar and line graphs.



Reasoning Ability:


Must possess the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, presentation, or video form. The capacity to review existing or new data to identify trends or identify anomalies is necessary, and the candidate must be capable of using experience and context clues to identify and act on unexpected results or unanticipated outcomes.



Physical Demands:


While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee will frequently read information from paper and electronic documents, digital screens, analog and digital meters, and other types of laboratory equipment.



The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, swivel and the hips, and reach overhead, and the position will require some stooping, kneeling, or crouching. The employee is required to be able to determine color and smell. The physical capacity to lift and/or move containers up materials to 24 pounds is required, and the ability to lift or move up to 75 pounds is helpful but not required. The use of step stools or step ladders is occasionally called for, but accommodation can be made for candidates with a disability which precludes or limits this capability.



Work Environment:


While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to work in a laboratory setting and be exposed to chemical materials. While not extensive or in large quantities, hazardous materials are present at company facilities, and a risk of exposure exists. Frequent use and handling of chemical materials may include the risk of exposure to fumes, vapors, dust, airborne particles, or toxic or caustic chemicals. Working with and around electrical equipment may carry a risk of electrical shock. The use of Personal Protective Equipment, including gloves, safety glasses, and lab coats in routinely required.



The Technical Specialist's work will involve some tasks that must be conducted in or near warehouse and chemical production areas, which will require awareness of hazards such as material handling equipment, chemical spills and response, overhead work, mechanical equipment, and slips, trips, and falls. Adherence to production area safety rules is required.

Technical / Specialized Skills:


Prior experience working in a laboratory setting, and familiarity with basic lab equipment, such as pH meters, thermometers, stop watches, balances, mixers, hot plates, heat and humidity chambers, and glassware, are required.



A fundamental understanding of laboratory safety, including best practices for This includes a working knowledge of chemical handling, familiarity with chemical properties and nomenclature, and the ability to read and interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS).



Digital Skills:


The successful candidate will possess above average competency in the use of digital productivity and communications applications. This includes the Microsoft and Google office suites (word processing, spreadsheets, slide presentations, chat applications, email, printing) and Adobe Acrobat.



The successful candidate will also be able to use these applications on all platforms as may be required, including Windows and Mac desktop/laptop computers, tablets, and other smart devices.



Other Requirements:


Mirachem operates within a relaxed, business-casual environment. There are no special uniform or dress code requirements, except that safety requirements must be always observed. As required by workplace safety standards, Mirachem will provide all necessary or appropriate protective clothing and equipment, or reimburse the employee for necessary custom or user-specific gear.

Mirachem has the responsibility for the workplace, day-to-day management, recruiting, staffing, disciplinary matters, job maintenance and performance. HCC prepares payroll, taxes and withholdings, workers compensation, benefits administration, and all other administrative and non-operational human resource functions. Any HR issues are to be addressed to Mirachem's Vice President of Operations, but you will receive correspondence from HCC for payroll, insurance and other routine requests.

Specific Duties:



  • General

    1. Perform all tasks in a safe manner and in accordance with company safety and laboratory hygiene policies.
    2. Assist in managing and maintaining department supplies.
    3. Maintain a safe and productive work environment, ensuring that all workspaces, equipment, and tools are properly cleaned, maintained, organized, and stored.
    4. Conduct all business and perform all duties according to company standards for cyber and information security, individual privacy, and confidentiality.


  • Task Identification and Management

    1. Participate in weekly planning and prioritization of tasks.
    2. Ensure a thorough understanding of assigned tasks, including materials and competencies needed, intended outcomes and deliverables, and required timelines.
    3. Assist in the preparation of templates, forms, worksheets, logs, and other tools necessary to successfully complete tasks according to established procedures.
    4. Remain on task to complete assignments in a timely manner, working with diligence and a sense of purpose.


  • Product Development / Materials Control / Laboratory Operations

    1. Prepare laboratory formulations for analytical, performance, compatibility, or other evaluations and experiments according to established procedures.
    2. Conduct performance, compatibility, or other evaluations and experiments according to established procedures.
    3. Perform analytical work according to established methods.
    4. Record progress notes, data, results, determinations and other information as required by methods and established procedures and in accordance with company policy on the control of documents and records.
    5. Perform all required follow-up and follow-through duties associated with assigned tasks, including recordkeeping, document management, filing, and reporting.


  • Quality Control

    1. Perform quality control inspections according to established methods and processes and complete all necessary documentation and filing.
    2. As necessary, complete all response flows according to established process or procedure.
