The Cloud Operations Engineer is responsible for administering all cloud-based and hosted infrastructure for all our employees, affiliates, students and our external customers. The department's needs evolve based on business needs and developments to provide a broad variety of system and application experiences across many operating systems, serverless configurations, and services. The role blends hands-on technical expertise with a strategic approach to systems reliability, compliance, and automation. The position requires a deep knowledge of Microsoft Azure Services and Amazon Web Services (AWS) and can help to transition between the two. While part of a dedicated technology team, this role effectively manages their individual work streams and appropriately manages related communication channels effectively.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    • Manage, automate tasks and administer cloud-based systems in AWS, Microsoft Azure, WordPress sites, Office 365, Okta, Contract Management System, DocuSign, KnowBe4, various cloud-based security systems, the monitoring system and remote management system.
    • Ability to administer and manage IIS and Apache application servers.
    • Perform advanced database (RDS, Aurora or Cosmos) administration tasks.
    • Enabling and managing provisioning workflows to ensure secure, automated user lifecycle management.
    • Troubleshoot issues and solve complex problems in our hosted and cloud-based systems and be able to perform root cause analysis.
    • Manage backups and perform system updates in our AWS and Azure environments.
    • Responsible for maintaining disaster recovery and incident response documentation for cloud environments.
    • Implement and manage SAML Single Sign-On (SSO) for internal and third-party SaaS platforms.
    • Support and manage integrations between front-end and back-end systems including analytics and identity providers.
    • Identify and resolve alerts from the security operations center.
    • Enforce configuration consistency, cost optimization, and security hardening practices.
    • Backup and Support CI/CD pipelines in collaboration with DevOps and Technology
    • Backup the network administer for on-premise infrastructure.
    • Seek to continuously improve security, standardization and performance on these cloud based\hosted systems.
    • Availability to be on call to support production and non-production environments.

Cloud Engineering:

  • Responsible for designing, administering, and troubleshooting distributed systems (errors, scaling or traffic load issues, configuration changes and maintain system integrity) in AWS and Microsoft Azure.
  • Develop a set of scalable and reliable cloud systems tailored to business needs.
  • Identify and resolve issues to maintain reliable cloud services to minimize downtime.
  • Create/maintain documentation on cloud and hosted systems.
  • Experience building and managing cloud systems using serverless platforms and automating infrastructure with Infrastructure-as-code templates.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's Degree with 7+ or more years in IT hosting or cloud engineering or other equivalent experience.
  • At least 5 years+ experience using AWS and Microsoft Azure with at least 1 year focused on education technology.
  • At least 1 year of database administration experience.
  • 5+ years of experience architecting cloud-based infrastructure.
  • Ability to setup autoscaling and clustered environments.
  • 5+ years of experience administering Microsoft Office, Visio, or equivalent productivity tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, user-friendly solutions.
  • Proven ability to stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies.
  • Effective communicator, able to engage stakeholders with varied technical backgrounds and ensure shared understanding of processes.
  • Proficiency in implementing and managing least-privilege access controls to maintain system security.
  • Hands-on experience supporting high-reliability production environments requiring precision and uptime.
  • Preferred: Experience with relational and NoSQL databases, including RDS, Cosmos, SQL Server, PostGres SQL, MongoDB, and MySQL.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% (typically three to four trips annually).

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Proficiency in modern software engineering practices, such as CI/CD, Agile development, and infrastructure automation.
  • Ability to manage Master Data Management systems such as Profisee and Purview.
  • Knowledge of student financial aid processes and the higher education industry.
  • Adaptability to innovation in a rapidly changing industry.
  • Experience managing containerized applications (e.g., Docker) and using orchestration platforms to deploy, scale and maintain systems in production.

Pay range - Exempt ($94,400 - $118,000 - $141,600)
