What You'll Do
Library Technology Specialist serves as the primary point of contact for library staff to receive support and maintenance for library equipment and software systems. Specialists also recommend, install, maintain, and troubleshoot computer software and hardware in support of library operations including library automation software, personal computers, and local area network used by the general public, staff and other library departments. Administration of library servers and computing systems including: Windows Servers, Linux servers, peripherals and other library technology devices (including tablet devices) and software. Lastly, they may also develop and deliver training for library staff, and maintain the library intranet site.


Minimum Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in computer science, library information systems, or closely related field
OR
* Associate's degree or two year technical certificate in computer science, library information systems, or related field AND Two years' experience with installation and support of personal computers, application software and networks.
OR
* An equivalent combination of education and experience to equal or exceed 4 years. Experience should be directly related to the installation and support of personal computers, application software and networks.
AND
* Valid driver's license


Duties & Responsibilities

These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions.

1. Responds to requests for assistance from library staff, county departments, and occasionally the public. Supported areas include Integrated Library System (ILS), desktop computers, devices used in delivery of library services, software used in delivery of library services, internal web sites, and peripherals.

2. Provides reference and research services to internal and external customers including responding to informational requests or inquiries, searching for computer software and hardware information and examining print and electronic reference sources for information

3. Performs systems maintenance by diagnosing and resolving: software problems, hardware problems including replacement and warranty service, working with County IT to resolve network problems. Maintains peripheral equipment on an ongoing basis as well as library servers and databases.

4. Monitors and maintains library software including installing patches as needed, upgrading software, when necessary, coordinate vendor support as needed and diagnose and resolve software problems.

5. Manages and maintains library servers including monitoring server operations, diagnosing and resolving server operational problems, coordinating hardware and software upgrades, managing server resources for efficient operation, ensuring adequate resources are available for applications, monitor backups, develop and validate disaster recovery plans and recommend upgrades

6. Supports, monitors, and maintains Symphony Integrated Library System (ILS) by performing daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance tasks, coordinating system upgrades with vendor support, coordinate with vendor for support and develop custom reports as needed using PERL, and other scripting tools
7. Maintain and develop intranet site using SharePoint.

8. Serves on Library, County, and regional library system committees to share ideas, solve problems and propose policies and procedures; directs and/or participates in project management.

9. Recommends and processes purchase, replacement, or removal of equipment based on currency, condition, growth, and use, and maintains supply inventory levels and equipment inventories on an on-going basis. Evaluates and tests emerging technologies in support of library operations.

10. Prepares appropriate library operations reports and gathers statistics on an ongoing basis for library software, personal computers, attached peripherals.

11. Provides on-going training to library staff in the effective use of job-related software and hardware. Occasional public training will also be delivered.

12. Processes library notices and reports including printing, distribution, mail preparation and statistical recording.

13. Continue professional development.

14. Maintain library discovery layer, develop & maintain custom pages using HTML, CSS & jQuery and track site statistics using Google Analytics and recommend changes as needed.

Work Environment
Work is completed in County Libraries and requires frequent lifting, stooping, reaching, and lifting/transporting heavy to moderately heavy objects, such as computers and peripheral equipment. Strong dexterity of hands and fingers to operate computer keyboard, mouse, hand and power tools, and to handle other computer components is needed. Must have the ability to drive county/personal vehicles to travel between libraries and/or attend events on behalf of the department.

Location & Schedule

This position has potential for hybrid scheduling offering a mix of telework and in-person work at our Wescott Library in Eagan, MN. Work is performed Monday through Friday during regular business hours (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). A limited number of overtime hours or on-call availability may be needed to resolve support issues.
