Position Summary:

This position is responsible for leading a crew of skilled trade personnel, responsible for inventory and movement of all purchased and manufactured material, including shipping and receiving at our vast, 63-acre facility. Significant heavy manufacturing takes place both in several fab shops, as well as on the waterfront. The successful candidate will support the 1,000+ working men and women on our waterfront by leading and managing the material control group by implementing departmental objectives that meet the strategic, competitive, and internal/external needs of the company; and developing appropriate controls and performance measures to assist in the accomplishment of those objectives.

Detailed Description:



  • Supervise the activities and development of union employees in shipping, receiving, warehouse and tool room departments.
  • Perform daily time recording of all union employees. Plan overtime and schedule resources as required to meet schedule. Manage staffing and work assignments based on manning forecast.
  • Frequent communication with peer-level and sub-level management personnel and general workforce. Provide status reports to immediate management and program management as required.
  • Explore and develop continuous improvement plans for storage and distribution activities utilizing new technologies and industry best practices. Drive and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Develop and administer operating procedures for receiving, handling, storing, shipping or salvaging products and materials.
  • Manage the storage and distribution needs of customers including coordinating requests, answering questions and responding to any concerns.
  • Manage inventory levels of products and materials in warehouses. Monitor inventory cycle counts and lean (5S) initiatives.
  • Responsible for the safe handling and storage of all purchased material. Maintain stored equipment IAW manufacturer's discretion. Confer with Department Heads to coordinate warehouse activities including production, sales, record control and purchasing. Arrange for additional storage facilities as required. Participate in managing transportation providers. Examine products or materials and estimate best methods for storage or transport.
  • Issue shipping instructions and maintain documentation. Responsible for providing routing information to coordinate delivery times and locations.
  • Prepare and manage departmental budgets. Ensure budgetarty compliance with indirect and direct project accounts.
  • Facilitate and manage material handling logistics to efficiently support manufacturing schedules.
  • Maintain yard cleanliness to IAW FBS standards.
  • Attendance is an essential function of the job.
  • Ability and willingness to engage in highly energetic pursuits on the waterfront.
  • Abide by safety and sanitation regulations. Abide by all organizational policies and procedures.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises 5 to 25 employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding's policies, and procedures. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Willingness to be a mentor, and demonstrate leadership skills that align with the mission, vision, and values of Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding.
