Electrical Engineering Internship

Please note: This position requires in person on site part time work during the school semester and offers full time over winter break and in the summer.
Job Description
This position is for an Electrical Engineering Intern to aid in the preparation of detailed technical designs for standard, configured, and custom designed products based on engineering data, standard references, and customer supplied specifications. This position works within our Product Support Department.
During the summer, full time hours (40+/week) are available. We expect around 15 hours per week during the school year. Hours are flexible to allow you to prioritize your classes and schoolwork.
Required Competencies
- Strong skills in electrical circuits, magnetics, power conversion, and power systems.
- Exposure to three phase power systems, power magnetics, motors, or power electronics.
- The ability and willingness to take independent action and complete job tasks.
- Strong troubleshooting skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Software Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.)
Additional Desired Competencies
- Knowledge of magnetic design principles including calculation of inductance, flux density, losses, material properties, lamination thickness, thermal losses, and characterization of magnetic saturation.
- Working knowledge of power quality standards and power quality measurement techniques.
- Experience with simulation and analysis tools such as PSIM, MATLAB, MathCAD, and FEA.
- Familiarity with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
- Ability to operate lab diagnostic equipment such as oscilloscopes, digital multi meters, spectrum analyzers, LCR meters, and bench power supplies.
- Knowledge of three-phase power passive filter circuits (passive harmonic filters and low-pass filters.)
- Familiarity with 3-phase 480V power laboratory safety and test methodologies.
- Experience with computer programing, such as MATLAB, Python, C#, and Lua
Job Responsibilities
Job responsibilities will be partially driven by qualifications and area of interest expressed by the student, but typical tasks will include:
- Preparing technical designs for standard, configured and custom designed products.
- Use computer assisted engineering and design software to perform engineering and design tasks.
- Work with mechanical designers to research and select components based off ratings, components, and agency requirements.
- Selects raw materials and components; develops specifications for selected products meeting desired cost targets. May assist TCI's product sourcing group in the qualification and selection of component and raw material suppliers.
- Provide product cost estimates for materials, labor, etc.
- Research and evaluate engineering standards and specifications (UL, NEC, IEC, etc.).
- Perform product testing, design validation, and prototype assembly on a needed basis.
Interns will be exposed to all or some of the following tools and technologies: PSIM, MathCAD, MATLAB, power magnetic simulation tools such as OPS, ANSYS, and project documentation WIKIs.
Basic Qualifications for Consideration
- Current enrollment at an accredited college or university engineering program (UW-Milwaukee, UW-Madison, MSOE, or equivalent).
- Junior or Senior standing pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering or similar with a focus on power and energy conversion and a minimum GPA of 3.0.
Work Schedule Available
- Full time during summer (40+/week)
- Part time during school (~15+/week).
