POSITION SPECIFICS

Penn State's Office of the Senior Vice President for Research directs efforts to translate the intellectual capital of the University into the marketplace as part of the University's economic development and land-grant missions.

Under the direction of the Executive Director of the Nittany Angels, we are seeking a Program Director with overall responsibilities for developing and managing the day-to-day operations.

Work Arrangement: This individual in this position will operate fully in-person at our University Park campus.

The role includes the following:

  • Creating and managing a steady flow of qualified, early-stage investment opportunities.
  • Facilitating the investment process from initial screening to closing, establishing and managing the support resources.
  • Managing communications with the angel investors, prospective startup companies, and other stakeholders.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Facilitates the investment process from initial screening, due diligence, company presentations, to deal- closing and portfolio management.
  • Recruits and manages participants in the screening and due diligence processes including angel investors, students, and others.
  • Implements and utilize technology platforms to manage startup company investment applications and on-going communication with investors.
  • Develops and maintains processes to ensure professional and timely communication with investors, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders.
  • Assists with implementation of membership plans to motivate qualified Penn State-affiliated investors to join the network.
  • Organizes member orientations, social gatherings, and educational activities for prospective investors.
  • Utilizes various elements of the university to establish and maintain a dynamic and effective angel network that enhances the Penn State entrepreneurial spirit.
  • In collaboration with the OSVPR marketing department, develops and executes a marketing plan to stimulate entrepreneurs to apply for funding and investor participation.
  • Collaborates with other university angel network leaders to establish and maintain best practices.
  • Networks with other early-stage investors, entrepreneurial support organizations, and influencers.
  • Defines, publishes and refines the investment process requirements.
  • Ensures internal control oversight and compliance with laws and regulations, safeguarding of assets, compliance with university policies and procedures, reliability of internal and external reporting, and efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
  • Creates an effective control environment, conducts risk assessment, implements and monitors controls.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in angel investor network management or at a venture capital firm
  • Excellent planning and management skills
  • Excellent collaboration, communication, and organizational skills
  • Excellent finance and budgeting skills
  • Excellent at using various technology platforms
  • Requires knowledge of business formation processes, market analysis and due diligence processes
  • Requires knowledge in assessment of early-stage investment opportunities
  • Requires experience in recruiting entrepreneurs and business development resources

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced technical degree or MBA
  • Experience working in a university setting
  • 10+ years in launching early-stage technology start-ups
  • Experience in diverse technical domains and geographies
  • Extensive network of angel investors

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

Master's Degree 6+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $109,300.00 - $164,000.00.
