Overview Con Edison is seeking a skilled and motivated metallurgist to join the Steam Plant Reliability Engineering Section within the Steam and Gas Engineering Department. This role involves conducting failure and root cause analyses, advising on material selection, developing inspection and condition assessment programs, and supporting welding operations through procedure and qualification reviews.Candidates must have a strong understanding of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel and Power Piping Codes, with relevant experience in power plant equipment and piping systems. The position requires excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to learn company-specific software. Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
- Develop and manage condition assessment inspection projects, including evaluation of component history, development of inspection (NDE) project scopes and specifications, bid preparation and evaluation, and review of results.
- Provide technical support and guidance to Operations, Maintenance, and Construction personnel, as well as providing direct field support in response to failures and emergencies, especially welding support to review and approve procedures and qualifications.
- Make technical and economical evaluations to determine the best inspection and repair courses of action to support System and Gas Engineering counterparts and Steam Production Operations.
- Investigate and develop responses and solutions to Generating Station engineering service requests (ESR); perform cost benefit analysis for proposed solutions.
- Prepare sketches required to modify systems and equipment, supports the implementation by Company forces.
- Assist in the preparation of operating, maintenance, and test/inspection requirements for Generating Stations equipment.
- Conceive, plan, design solutions or alternatives of new refurbishment projects, including technical and economic evaluations, specification preparation, feasibility studies and long-term planning.
- Present on project details to inform and guide Central Engineering, various internal Customers, and all levels of management.
- Provide other technical assistance as required.
Qualifications
Required Education/Experience
- Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of applicable technical work experience, or
- Associate's Degree and 8 years of applicable technical work experience.
Relevant Work Experience
- Exhibit a thorough understanding of plant design, construction, operations, maintenance, and analysis in the utility industry, oil & gas industry, required.
- Ability to write specifications and standards and coordinate engineering projects and assignments, required.
- Knowledge in welding requirements to review and approve procedures and qualifications, required.
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, Projects), as well as the ability to learn other company software systems, required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with personnel on all levels, required.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and sub-projects concurrently, required.
- Supervisory experience of professional and union employees, preferred.
- Hands-on experience in operations and maintenance of rotating equipment, preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
- Driver's License Required
- Other: CWI Certified Welding Inspector Preferred
Physical Demands
- Ability to respond to system emergencies
- Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
- Perform heavy manual labor, i.e. push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs
- Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
- Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
- Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
- Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
Additional Physical Demands
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to make the required visits to power plants and commercial facilities.
- Ability to work in a generating plant environment.
