Leidos Defense is seeking a talented Senior Software Safety Engineer for our growing portfolio of Depart of Defense and NASA programs. This opportunity is for someone looking to grow their existing software safety experience to take on expanding levels of responsibility across many exciting programs. With offices across the United States engaging in the defense, space, cyber and commercial fields, Leidos provides responsive, cost-effective engineering, scientific and IT solutions. Individuals with previous software safety experience are preferred.

Primary Responsibilities

This position will assure the safety of various programs to a variety of defense and NASA software safety standards.

  • Developing software safety plans and standards

  • Working with the customer system safety and software safety organizations

  • Working with system safety to analyze systems for hazards

  • Developing software safety requirements, ensuring the software safety requirements are implemented and tested in the software systems

  • Working with suppliers to ensure supplier products and processes meet program software safety standards

  • Generating software safety assessment reports

Basic Qualifications

  • Must possess at least a Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent technical degree.

  • Must have 10+ years of relevant technical experience with a BS degree or 7+ years of experience with a MS degree.

  • Must demonstrate basic competency in real-time safety or mission critical software systems development using languages such as C, C++, or Ada.

  • Proven experience with software safety standards including NASA Standards NASA-STD-8739.8B, NPR 7150.2D, NASA-HDBK-4008, MIL-STD-882E, AMCOM-385-17, MIL_HDK-516C, RTCA DO-178C, or ISO 26262.

  • Software safety experience on DoD and NASA programs is preferred. Software safety experience in civil aviation, nuclear, automotive, or medical industries will be considered.

  • Strong analytical skills along with a personal drive for details and quality workmanship are a must.

  • Must possess an aptitude for the technical skills required for software safety including understanding systems and the results of potential system failures.

  • Must demonstrate familiarity with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

  • Good communication skills and have proven leadership skills with the ability to affect outcomes including the ability to persuade on technical topics.

  • Self-motivated, paying attention to details, and working under deadlines are key elements of this position as well.

  • Candidate must be a resident of North Alabama area or be willing to relocate to the Huntsville/North Alabama area.

  • US Citizenship is required.

  • Candidate must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a secret clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous software safety project leadership is preferred.
