Job Summary

The Senior Associate Athletic Director serves as the chief fundraising and solicitation officer for the FIU Intercollegiate Athletics program. They are charged with providing strategic and operational leadership in the successful development, implementation, ongoing management and continued growth of a comprehensive fundraising program and department in support of Intercollegiate Athletics. Works with the Athletics Director and Vice President to develop and execute annual and long-term fundraising goals (including leadership and principal giving: $500k+) and operational plans. Directs and manages all aspects of the Intercollegiate Athletics development team. Develops effective and productive working relationships with internal and external constituents. Serves as part of the Athletic Directors executive team and senior leadership development team.

  • Develops and directs the strategic plan for fund-raising, stewardship, board management for Intercollegiate Athletics. Implements strategies to secure philanthropic support from individuals, corporations, and foundations in support of Intercollegiate Athletics' campaign and fund-raising priorities. Directs all fundraising activities as well as initiates, plans and coordinates the development of donor cultivation, proposals, solicitations and stewardship. Proactively manages a personal portfolio of up to 180 potential donors, prospects or suspects.
  • Works with Head Coaches, VP of Development and the Director of Athletics on design of fundraising and donor messaging, including vision for direction of Athletics Program. Develops campaigns and/or presentation proposals related to funding priorities in order to keep top prospects informed, interested, and involved and to meet development goals and objectives. Collaborates with External Relations and University Advancement for execution of said messaging. Utilizes media channels and emerging technologies effectively to fundraise.
  • Directs all fundraising activities relative to the assigned initiatives in Intercollegiate Athletics. Identifies, cultivates and solicits prospects for major gifts to support FIU Athletics Program. Initiates, plans and coordinates the development of donor cultivation, proposals and solicitation of gifts, specifically focused on FIU Athletics. Produces and provides regular fundraising reports and reporting on metrics with constituent development progress.
  • Plans, organizes, and implements fundraising activities in collaboration with Head Coaches and VP of Development. Works in tandem with FIU Athletics leadership, coaches, development colleagues, and other constituent groups to meet annual goals for fundraising. Ensures proper stewardship of existing donor base. Represents FIU Athletics at various university, advancement, donor and/or community events.
  • Solicits support from previous and potential donors to the University and manages a continually growing prospect portfolio of individual and institutional major gift prospects. Meets with potential donors on campus and in the community. Travels locally, nationally and internationally when required, to meet with prospective donors. Attends meetings, gatherings or University-sponsored events.
  • Engages Head coaches in fundraising strategies and priorities. Informs and provides regular updates regarding goal progress, new plans and project proposals. Ensures that all are engaged and working collaboratively towards to same goal.
  • Organizes, promotes and maintains collaborative working relationships with key leadership, staff, board members and volunteers in support of FIU. Participates in university-wide prospect management, cultivation and stewardship of donors and prospects. Develops and implements a strategic work plan that focuses on the internal and external objectives of the FIU Athletics Program.
  • Works with key leadership volunteers on fundraising initiatives.
  • Serves as a key member of the Intercollegiate Athletics Development team. Participates in and adheres to university-wide prospect management guidelines for cultivation and stewardship of donors and prospects. Attends all development meetings as required. Develops and implements an annual strategic work plan and solicitation matrix that focuses on the internal and external objectives of Athletics and university advancement. Ensures the cooperative participation of Athletics development staff in the university prospect management and tracking system, as well as with University alumni relations.
  • Drafts and reviews written proposals for major gifts.
  • Serves as the merchant account's primary contact or technical contact; Handles sensitive cardholder information and/or processes credit cards transactions for the department/unit; Will have access to a third party system (software, gateway, etc.) that processes, transmits, and/or stores cardholder information.
  • Prepares reports and presentations and presents to volunteer groups re: campaign activities and progress.
  • Serves as the Procard Approver for departmental transactions. Assures compliance and adherence to University credit card policies and procedures.
  • May handle donated funds in the forms of checks or negotiable securities. Handles cash/gifts card transactions on a daily basis. Accesses confidential information regarding gifts and donors.
  • Maintains confidentiality for the department. Treats with utmost confidentiality and sensitivity any matter pertaining to academic and personal data of student athletes and any information either directly or indirectly impacting the University and/or Athletic Department.
  • Adheres to all State of Florida, University, NCAA, Conference USA and department rules and policies pertaining to the position of Development Officers. Reports any known NCAA violations or concerns to the Director of Athletics Compliance and be responsible for the monitoring of any subordinate as it relates to NCAA regulations.
  • Serves as a University card user for departmental transactions. Adheres to University credit card policies and procedures.
  • May represent the University and/or assigned unit in public functions as needed.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and twelve (12) years of experience with seven (7) years of experience in fundraising. Supervises/ manages subordinate staff.

Desired Qualifications

Demonstrated experience in securing major gifts ($100k+) and principal gifts ($500k+).

Prior experience in a leadership role within an intercollegiate athletics fundraising program.

A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible fundraising experience.

Experience managing and leading a team of development professionals.

Proven experience working with an athletic director and other university executives to develop and execute fundraising strategies.
