About the Job
The Production Stage Manager is an essential member of the Department of Theatre Arts & Dance and the production team with supervisory responsibility for the stage management teams and run crews. This position collaborates closely with colleagues, designers, production team members, and students to ensure that all projects produced at UMTAD are artistically executed to the highest possible standard. This position ensures that the stage management requirements for all UMTAD productions are met. The PSM teaches, develops classes, and mentors undergraduate students in stage management within a broad liberal arts curriculum. The Production Stage Manager will manage issues with discretion and create a comfortable work environment. This position is the Rarig Center Facilities Management primary contact for Theatre Arts. This is a 10 month, annually renewable position, mid-August through mid-June. 65%- Production Stage Manager
- Provide PSM duties for TAD productions as necessary and required
- Lead and participate in the development of student and early career stage managers assigned to UMTAD productions to ensure that they fully contribute to the process, develop skills, and advance their knowledge
- Coordinate, supervise, and mentor stage managers and assistant stage managers for all UMTAD Mainstage Productions
- Coordinate, recruit, supervise, and mentor stage managers of BFA Studio Series
- Coordinate, recruit, supervise, and mentor stage managers of BA Studio Productions (Creative Collabs)
- Assist stage managers in the creation of prompt book(s) and all related production paperwork
- Work with creative and production teams as an active participant in achieving artistic goals, ensuring consistent quality, and preserving the highest production values for all productions
- Advocate for stage management students and policies affecting the Design/Tech Program
- Coordinate and disseminate schedules and other show-specific information to the acting company, creative team, and related staff in consultation and collaboration with the Production Manager
- Collaborate with stage managers to create efficient modes of communication within and across departments
- Be responsible for communicating safety and emergency procedures to actors and crew and maintaining safe practices during performance and rehearsals
- Maintain a consistent and sensitive relationship with colleagues and model supportive morale for the cast and crew
- Facilitate conflict resolution amongst actors/stage management/creative team, ensuring adherence to legal, department, and university policies and procedures
- Ensure all pertinent information relating to areas of responsibility to stage management staff is clearly communicated
- Consult with the production department, directing team, and/or department leadership on any issues that may arise during the rehearsal and production process
- Ensure all SM materials are sourced and replenished
- Coordinate and collaborate with the Barker Center Technical Coordinator on relevant production needs
- Work with DUS and D/T Program Head on development and implementation of Stage Management track

15% Teaching
- Instructor of Record: TH 3716/ TH 5716 Stage Management courses
- Advisory: 3760 Project Stage Management; TH 5780 Advanced Stage Management
- Supervisory / Instructor of Record: TH 3300 Performance Practicum, TH 3500 Design Practicum, TH 3700 Directing & Dramaturgy Practicum, TH 3900 Production Practicum
- Develop and deliver additional curriculum as necessary in consultation with DUS and D/T Program Head
- Other duties as assigned
10% Rarig Building Manager/Facilities Management (DFR)
- Primary contact for all mechanical and custodial issues
- Primary liaison with Landcare for snow/ice removal and cosmetics
- TRIRIGA Bi-Annual Facility Space Inventory
- Maintain building first aid kits
- Other duties as assigned
5% Auditions, Rehearsals, Run Crew
- Run auditions for all UMTAD Mainstage productions; BA and BFA Studios as needed in consultation with Program Heads
- Directly observe rehearsals as needed, designer runs, all tech and dress rehearsals.
- Scheduling/supervision of mainstage understudy rehearsals
- Recruitment and oversight of run crews, providing timely feedback to ensure a great backstage team
- Other duties as assigned
5% Administration and Recruitment
- Maintain/Update Understudy Policy, Director's Guide, and other related policies and guides. for UMTAD productions
- Act as a liaison on interdepartmental projects (department and departmentally sponsored events)
- Stay current with communication technology used by the department
- Ensure effective utilization of financial resources
- Project expenses and manage those expenses on a per-show basis
- Work collaboratively with other departments to determine and implement archival systems about each production for future reference
- Participate in student recruitment (conferences, internal and external events, etc.)
- Attend production meetings and other show-related meetings as required
- In collaboration with Director of Marketing & Communications, schedule photo and marketing sessions

Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's Degree Experience plus at least 6 years of related experience or master's degree plus at least four years of related experience.
- 7+ years of recent experience as a Production Stage Manager in professional theater and dance venues including practice and understanding of current production stage manager practices
- Extensive professional working knowledge of stage and/or production management and a broad understanding of other related theatrical production field
- Advanced computer skills including MS Office, Google Platforms, and Zoom.
- Professional experience supervising, mentoring, and leading direct and indirect reports
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Valid driver's license
- Proficiency in Google Platforms and Zoom
- Must be able to work flexible hours/days, including evenings and weekends, reflective of the dynamic schedule of UMTAD.
- Evidence of sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of faculty/staff and students, and to staff and students with disabilities.
- Must be able to stand for extended periods; lift up to 30 lbs and be able to kneel and/or stoop for short periods, engage in repetitive motions.
- Strong organizational, leadership, and time management skills
- Well-developed communication skills, demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and persuasively verbally and in writing on both an interpersonal and group level
- A strong interest in engaging college students through the arts
- Ability and willingness to exercise professional courtesy and discretion at all times and maintain confidentiality as required.

Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in stage or production management
- Experience teaching or working in the context of theatre education.
- Knowledge of AEA contracts and IATSE Local 13 rules and agreements as well as SDC and USA.
- Professional experience in safe workplace policies and procedures
Pay and Benefits
Pay Range: $48,927 to $54,075; depending on education/qualifications/experience Time Appointment Category: 100% Appointment. This is a 10 month, annually renewable position, mid-August through mid-June.
