If so, we're looking for someone like you to lead the Exploratory Science Branch (RH) within the Research and Exploratory Development Department (REDD).

The Exploratory Science Branch pioneers research that enables APL's future missions. The branch comprises six technical groups: Material Sciences, Physics, Biological Sciences, Human Performance & Biomechanics, Chemical Sciences, and Electronic Materials & Microsystems.

In this role you will lead a team of more than 200 staff toward developing advanced capabilities that address the nation's most pressing challenges. You will also serve as a key member of REDD's senior leadership team, working across the department, the Lab, and the broader research community to shape the future of exploratory science at the Laboratory.

As the Branch Supervisor, you will lead in the areas outlined below:

  • Strategy-based Innovation: Develop, communicate, and execute the vision and strategy for pursuing emerging scientific and technical areas with high potential for mission impact.
  • Invent the Future: Foster a culture of ideation, experimentation, and advanced prototyping, to pursue high-risk, high-reward research activities, and transition bold ideas into new capabilities.
  • Strong Partnerships: Partner with program management teams and sponsors to propose bold, forward-leaning ideas that position APL to make critical contributions to critical challenges
  • Allocate Resources: Oversee branch operations including investments in staff training and development, capital equipment, facilities management, and strategic resource planning.
  • Grow Talent and Build Leaders: Grow and enable multidisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, and researchers, by identifying talent, mentoring, recognizing accomplishments, creating staff development pathways, and developing future leaders.
  • Champion Collaboration: Drive collaboration across APL, connecting teams across REDD's branches, as well as partnering with sectors and mission areas across the Lab.
  • Cultivate External Impact: Cultivate external relationships with sponsors, collaborators, and the broader research community to ensure REDD's work is distinctive, responsive, and innovative.
  • Technical Integrity: Ensure excellence in the execution of technical work, maintaining the highest standards in technical quality, safety, and research integrity.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • A Master's level degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline related to the branch's core competencies (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Materials Science, Biomechanics).
  • 10+ years of demonstrated technical leadership in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Materials Science or Biomechanics.
  • Experience as a Group Supervisor, Program Manager, or higher, with a strong record of success in leading large, multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven ability to set strategy, identify emerging areas, and grow new technical initiatives.
  • Demonstrated enterprise-level thinking, action, and accomplishments.
  • Experience building and sustaining strong sponsor relationships and successfully transitioning research to application.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • PhD. in a relevant technical field.
  • Experience engaging with senior government and national security leaders to shape new scientific and mission initiatives.
  • Demonstrated success in building research portfolios and transitioning high-risk, high-reward ideas into impactful capabilities.
  • Experience mentoring staff and developing future leaders in a research-intensive environment.
  • Hold an active Top Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
