Organizational Unit Overview |
The East Carolina Community School involves cross campus collaboration to provide the students a spectrum of support and services to comprehensively address their academic, social-emotional, physical, and family/community needs. The school will include one class per grade level for pre-kindergarten through 5th grade. The
ECU Community school involves an integrated partnership with Pitt County Schools and will be housed within a local elementary school. |
Job Duties |
The East Carolina Community School within the College of Education is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, 11-month Exempt Professional Staff (
EPS) position. This is a stated definite term appointment for the role of Exceptional Child Director/Teacher. As an educator within the East Carolina University School, the EC Director/Special education teacher will collaborate to cultivate a culture of innovation that supports effective academic and behavior interventions and practices to promote academic and personal success for all students, including those with disabilities, in the school. In particular, this includes providing or coordinating the provision of 1) special education and related services as identified on eligible students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and/or 504 Plans, 2) allowable accommodations and/or assistive technology throughout instruction and assessment, and 3) work collaboratively with others to facilitate and implement innovative instruction to achieve the mission of the school.
In addition, the special educator will be responsible for 1) collaborating in providing positive behavior and supports to all students, 2) assisting with the collecting and analyzing student data used in progress monitoring, and 3) collaborating in the
IEP process. As the Exceptional Children's Services Director, the educator has knowledge of the policies and procedures regarding students with disabilities and will 1) prepare documents for inclusion in Exceptional Children reports and plans developed by the
ECU Community School Principal, 2) coordinate contract services with other agencies, including Pitt County Schools, and 3) actively participate in the school's student support team meetings, special education referral, and annual special education meetings. The EC Director/Special educator will also work collaboratively with the
ECU Community School Principal, university faculty/staff and others to facilitate and implement innovative instruction to achieve the mission of the school. and support the successful social-emotional, physical, and academic development of the students within the community school.
Leadership (25%)
-The EC Director/Teacher will demonstrate leadership to motivate effective learning practices and to strive for superior student performance so as to provide the best possible learning opportunities for academic, behavioral, and social-emotional growth by students with disabilities.
-The EC Director/Teacher will facilitate the broad goals of the school and plan accordingly and collaboratively with other teachers, the
ECU Community School Principal, the University School Executive Director and
ECU faculty members to ensure that procedures and schedules are implemented to carry out the total school program.
-The EC Director/Teacher will cultivate self-determination leading to leadership in students and families.
-The EC Director/Teacher will actively participate in professional development offered within the Community School and beyond to demonstrate a willingness to grow as a professional educator.
-The EC Director/Teacher will serve as an advocate for the students through implementation of innovative strategies and integration of a variety of support services such that each student's social, emotional, physical and academic potential can be maximized.
Positive School Culture (10%)
-The EC Director/Teacher will foster and engage in collaboration within the school and the broader community.
-The EC Director/Teacher will participate within a "professional community" of educators who guide one another in improving instruction; such as developing and aligning curriculum, instructional practices, and assessments; problem solving; and participating in peer observations.
-The EC Director/Teacher will create/foster an atmosphere that inspires innovation in the learning process such that the needs of students are met.
-The EC Director/Teacher will create/foster a culture that includes students and families such that they are involved and invested in the vision for the school and believe that their input is valued.
-The EC Director/Teacher will build the capacity of students to develop a mindset of inquiry and exploration.
Content Knowledge (10%)
-The EC Director/Teacher will demonstrate a strong grasp of elementary content (and strategies for expanding student access) through implementation of the
ECU Community School curriculum.
-The EC Director/Teacher will seek to maximize the interconnectedness of curricular areas within the classroom to meet the needs of learners.
-The EC Director/Teacher will make instruction relevant to the students to build upon their cultural and life experiences.
Administration (20%)
-EC Director/Teacher has knowledge of the policies and procedures regarding students with disabilities.
-EC Director/Teacher will coordinate with Pitt County Schools and other service agencies to meet all required services on students'
IEP and 504 Plans.
-EC Director/Teacher will serve on the student support team and collaborate with the Integrated Health Collaborative (
IHC).
-The EC Director/Teacher will supervise and support the part time special education teacher and EC teacher assistant.
-The EC Director/Teacher will collect data, document, write, and collaborate with the
ECU Community School Principal to submit all necessary state and federal compliance activities.
-The EC Director/Teacher will assist with the authoring of federal grants related to exceptional children to include generation of any required needs assessment, enrollment counts, and other required grant components.
Facilitation of Learning (15%)
-The EC Director/Teacher will effectively assess students through a variety of methods to determine appropriate instructional strategies, assistive technology, instructional and assessment accommodations, and learning environments.
-The EC Director/Teacher will collaborate with others within the
ECU Lab School to implement the Community School curriculum and achieve the mission of the school.
-The EC Director/Teacher will facilitate innovative learning based on the needs of students through engaging in a variety of methods, strategies, learning environments, and student groupings.
-The EC Director/Teacher will be mindful of the non-academic issues that impact student learning and seek to connect students and their families with appropriate services embedded within the school's integrated network of partners who will provide service and support.
-The EC Director/Teacher will be receptive to hosting a variety of
ECU faculty and students to assist with instruction.
-The EC Director/Teacher will analyze student learning collaboratively with other teachers, the Principal of the
ECU Community School, as well as
ECU faculty.
-The EC Director/Teacher will effectively adjust instruction based on analysis of student data such that the individual learning needs of students may be accommodated and met.
-The EC Director/Teacher will successfully function within a unique school setting that will include the implementation of innovative and non-traditional learning/methods.
Community Relations (15%)
-The EC Director/Teacher will engage in and enhance meaningful collaboration and relationships amongst school and community stakeholders.
-The EC Director/Teacher will facilitate developing a strong school community to foster increased student academic success.
-The EC Director/Teacher will actively engage in ongoing communication with parents to ensure they are informed about their child's progress within the school and to ensure families are aware of school resources available for their child and their family.
-The EC Director/Teacher will acknowledge the importance of community to improve learning and achievement of all students by collaborating with colleagues, families and other community members.
Research (5%)
-The EC Director/Teacher will work collaboratively with university staff to ensure accessibility to students needed to conduct research.
-The EC Director/Teacher will be receptive to visitors within the classroom for the purpose of instruction, assistance, research, and observation.
-The EC Director/Teacher will be observed, video-taped, and interviewed.
This position is contingent upon available funding. |
Minimum Education/Experience |
Bachelor's degree and an initial special education - general curriculum teaching license; excellent oral and written communication skills; and evidence of skill in working with at risk student populations. Qualifying degrees must be conferred and received from appropriately accredited institutions. |

Current North Carolina initial special education - general curriculum license is required. |
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education |
A minimum of 3 years teaching experience and a Master's degree.
1) teaching experience with student groups, in particular, students with disabilities receiving instruction in the general education curriculum, 2) knowledge and skills in assistive technology, Universal Design for Learning, and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, and 3) documented experience collaborating with general educators to support learners with disabilities. Additional preferences would include the following: knowledge of public school and university partnerships; experience as a school-level mentor or clinical teacher. |
