Position Description

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), a world-renowned research and education institution, is seeking a mission-driven, detail-oriented Treasury Manager to oversee the Laboratory's cash, investment, and debt management functions. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Treasury Manager will be responsible for optimizing liquidity, strengthening financial controls, supporting long-term financial sustainability, and ensuring that treasury operations align with the Laboratory's strategic and scientific priorities.


Position Responsibilities

Cash and Liquidity Management

  • Forecast short- and long-term cash needs with a high degree of accuracy, taking into account grant cycles, philanthropic revenue, capital projects, and program expenditures.

  • Maintain and monitor daily liquidity to ensure operating requirements and reserve targets are met.

  • Recommend strategies for working capital optimization, including receivables, payables, and reserves.

Investment Management and Endowment Related Responsibilities

  • Help monitor performance against investment and cash management policies; participate in investment activities related to the endowment in collaboration with the Investment Committee, senior management, external investment advisors and custodians.

  • Responsible for the quarterly reporting of endowment fund balances and draws for operations.

  • Work with Advancement on establishing endowment funds for new gifts, and ensuring compliance with any restrictions, including Board designations

  • Coordinate month-end custodian reporting and manage overall custodian relationship.

  • Help coordinate preparation of regular reporting on investment performance, compliance, and liquidity tiering.

Banking and Debt Management

  • Manage relationships with the Laboratory's banking and credit card processing partners, ensuring strong service levels and competitive fee structures.

  • Monitor compliance with debt covenants, manage drawdowns on grant awards, and assist with debt modeling and refinancing strategies, including tax-exempt financing.

  • Coordinate/monitor all required compliance and other reporting in connection with outstanding debt issues.

Risk Management and Controls

  • Design and enforce treasury controls and segregation of duties for cash disbursements, wire transfers, credit card processing, banking access, and cash handling.

  • Collaborate with the Controller's Office and audit team to strengthen internal control procedures.

  • Support business continuity planning from a treasury and liquidity perspective.

Technology and Reporting

  • Leverage Workday and other treasury tools to automate reconciliations, reporting, and liquidity monitoring.

  • Maintain data integrity across treasury systems; ensure integration between banking portals, custodial systems, Lawson currently and ultimately Workday.

  • Develop dashboards and monthly reporting packages for executive leadership and the Board.

  • Partner with FP&A to align treasury forecasts with operating and capital budgets.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Serve as a trusted resource to Advancement, Sponsored Programs, and Operations to ensure treasury processes support institutional needs.

  • Educate stakeholders on treasury principles and advocate for sound financial stewardship across the organization.


Position Requirements

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, or related field.

  • Master's degree or professional certification (e.g., CTP, CFA, CPA, MBA) a plus.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 5-7+ years of progressive experience in treasury, banking, or nonprofit financial management.

  • Experience with ERP systems (e.g., Workday) and treasury workstations

  • Familiarity with nonprofit accounting, grant funding cycles, and endowment management a plus

  • Experience supporting or interacting with Board Finance, Audit & Risk or Investment committees

SKILLS:

  • Strong analytical and modeling skills; comfort with liquidity forecasting and investment analysis.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage banking relationships and complex cash structures.

  • Knowledge of internal controls, fraud prevention, and compliance practices.

  • Mission-aligned, ethical, and stewardship-minded.

  • Proactive and systems-oriented, with a drive for continuous improvement.

  • Clear communicator with the ability to explain complex concepts to non-financial stakeholders.

  • Comfortable working in a collaborative, fast paced, and intellectually driven environment.
