EWI's Data science group acts as turbo charger for EWI's innovation engine. We specialize in working cross-disciplinary with EWI's cutting-edge manufacturing technology teams including additive manufacturing (3D printing), advanced stamping, robotics, ultrasonics, and lasers. Data science focuses include the industrial internet of things (IIOT), using in-line sensing to predict part quality, semi-analytical modeling, probabilistic modeling, and data modeling. For the Machine Learning Engineer role, we are searching for expertise, practical experience, and visionary thinking in manufacturing data science. Our customers are based across the country and include world-class leaders in the aerospace, automotive, consumer products, electronics, medical, energy & chemical, government, and heavy manufacturing industries.

The Machine Learning Engineer position is located at Buffalo Manufacturing Works, operated by EWI - a one-of-kind center for advanced manufacturing focused on developing, maturing and implementing new technologies that have an impact on the clients we work with and the communities in which they live. Located in Buffalo, New York, we are dedicated to building a nationally-recognized hub of manufacturing innovation and are looking for smart, passionate, entrepreneurial, inventive and driven people to help us achieve this goal.

We are currently looking to add a data scientist to our collaborative team of researchers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:



  • Collaborate with world-leading manufacturing process experts to understand manufacturing challenges in areas such as

    • Arc welding
    • Additive manufacturing (3D printing)
    • Robotics
    • Ultrasonics
    • Lasers


  • Identify potential solutions that could bring clear value to manufacturers
  • Develop code to automate data acquisition, management, and analytics
  • Create frontends to expose models to process experts
  • Organize data so that it is findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable
  • Develop, apply, iterate, and test analytics
  • Present results to stakeholders
  • Establish thought leadership through conference presentations, peer reviewed publications, patents, and marketing pieces

Minimum Requirements

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

The candidate must have all of the following general skills:



  • Extensive experience in Python
  • Moderate experience in web development (e.g., React, TypeScript, HTML, CSS)
  • Backend development tools such as FastAPI and/or Flask
  • Experience with SQL
  • Version control, unit/integration testing, and code review
  • Containerization with Docker
  • Experience with Kubernetes preferred
  • Previous work on large codebases highly preferred
  • Experience testing and applying a range of ML/AI approaches
  • Ability to interface with manufacturing process experts
  • Proficient in MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Due to the nature of this work supporting federal contracts, sole US citizenship is required



EDUCATION:



  • B.S. in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or similar discipline
  • PhD is preferred
