JOB TITLE: System Director, Materials Management

JOB OVERVIEW:

The System Director, Materials Management provides strategic and operational leadership for Central Supply services across two acute care hospitals and Ambulatory Services. This role ensures alignment with the health system's mission, vision, and values while driving efficiency, compliance, and cost savings. The Director oversees all aspects of supply chain management, including procurement, inventory control, vendor relations, and distribution, ensuring reliable and cost-effective delivery of medical and surgical supplies that directly support patient care. The position collaborates with hospital and clinical leadership to integrate supply chain functions with the organization's primary services, advancing operational performance and clinical outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Optimizes inventory management by maintaining target inventory turns, ensuring supply availability with minimal stockouts, and reducing expired or wasted supplies.
  • Ensures cost-effective procurement by negotiating vendor contracts and pricing agreements that achieve annual savings while maintaining quality and compliance with standards.
  • Monitors supply chain performance by tracking order accuracy, fill rate, on-time delivery, and cost per adjusted patient day, and develops action plans for continuous improvement.
  • Drives standardization across facilities by implementing system-wide supply chain processes, formulary compliance, and product standardization to reduce variation and improve purchasing leverage.
  • Supports clinical outcomes by ensuring reliable supply availability for critical patient care areas and collaborating with clinical leaders to evaluate utilization patterns.
  • Manages departmental budget and resources by developing and monitoring operational budgets, achieving cost-per-case and expense targets while maintaining service quality.
  • Leads and develops supply chain staff by providing coaching, evaluations, and professional development to improve engagement, performance, and retention.
  • Ensures compliance with The Joint Commission, CMS, and OSHA standards by maintaining audit readiness and regulatory adherence across all operations.
  • Leverages technology and data analytics by implementing supply chain software, barcoding, or RFID systems to improve efficiency and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Collaborates across the health system by partnering with finance, nursing, and other departments to align supply chain operations with organizational goals and achieve stakeholder satisfaction.

Qualifications

JOB QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree required, Master's Degree preferred.
  • Certification: Certified Materials & Resources Professional (CMRP) preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of seven (7) years in supply chain, materials management, or procurement in a healthcare setting. Minimum of five (5) years of progressive leadership experience with direct responsibility for managing employees.

Skills: Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including speaking voice with clear communication. Computer literacy of basic computers and how they work to include MS Office applications.

  • Physical Requirements: Moderate standing, walking, and sitting. Light balancing, kneeling, crouching, reaching/working overhead, climbing and pushing and/or lifting up to 25 pounds. Heavy keyboard use/repetitive hand motion.
  • Work Conditions: Availability to work in a hospital environment.
