Summary: The Speechwriter role provides high-level writing and editorial support for MRDC Command leadership, with a focus on speechwriting, talking points, and strategic messaging. This position requires a skilled communicator who can translate complex topics into compelling narratives for diverse audiences across military, academic, and industry events. The role also includes collaboration with engagement personnel and support for executive-level presentations and public appearances.
Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
- Work with the writer/editor/engagements personnel to develop story ideas and approaches.
- Interview subject matter experts on complex issues, and write plain-language newsletter articles that are ready for publishing.
- Write and edit in Associated Press (AP) style.
- Write and edit for web style with an understanding of operational security requirements.
- Rapidly research topics and write talking points or speeches for executive leadership to include but not limited to:
- Industry and academic events. (City of Frederick events, Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science (GEMS) program graduations, Strengthening the Mid-Atlantic Region for Tomorrow Procurement (SMART PROC) conference).
- Military events. (Association of the United State Army (AUSA), Military Health System Research Symposium (MHSRS), Military Medicine Partnership Days (MMPD)).
- Create slide-sets in PowerPoint.
- Attend speaking engagements to hear presentation styles.
- Attend calendar scrubs and syncs to ensure coverage and awareness of command events.
Qualifications
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
- Exceptional writing and editing skills with the ability to craft speeches and talking points tailored to specific audiences.
- Strong research and interviewing capabilities.
- Proficiency in AP style and web writing standards.
- Ability to synthesize complex information into clear, engaging narratives.
- Familiarity with military, scientific, and government terminology.
- Skilled in PowerPoint presentation design.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to meet tight deadlines.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Political Science, or a related field OR equivalent work experience
- 3+ years of experience in speechwriting, editorial work, or strategic communications.
- Demonstrated ability to write for executive-level audiences.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially PowerPoint.
- Familiarity with AP style and digital content standards.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in a relevant field.
- Experience supporting DoD, DHA, or federal government communications
- Experience writing for military or government leadership.
- Background in science or medical communications.
- Experience attending and supporting high-profile speaking engagements.
- Familiarity with command-level operations and event coordination.
