THE POSITION

Do you have a passion for history, love working with historic buildings and museum collections, revel in teaching complex topics to a wide range of audiences, and enjoy managing multifaceted museum operations? If so, the Bureau of Historic Sites and Museums (BHSM) of the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) is looking for a museum director to manage Ephrata Cloister, a four time American Alliance of Museums accredited historic site in Lancaster County, PA. Apply today to continue your career at one of Pennsylvania's premier historic sites!

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Each year, thousands of people from across the country and around the world visit Ephrata Cloister to experience the historic home of Pennsylvania's most prominent 18th-century religious community. As the Site Administrator for Ephrata Cloister, you will play a crucial role in the preservation and interpretation of this 28-acre National Historic Landmark. The site boasts a modern visitor center, two cemeteries, 11 historically significant buildings, dating to the 18th and early 19th-centuries, an amazing collection of period artifacts, and a dynamic calendar of educational programs and events.

As the site administrator, you will manage the operation and development of Ephrata Cloister. The administrator plans, directs, monitors and supervises all facets of day-to-day operations. Responsibilities include maintenance and preservation of buildings, systems and grounds, personnel management, financial management, security, collections care and management, exhibits, interpretation, educational programming, various types of planning, recruitment and training of volunteers, fundraising, identifying and developing community partners, marketing, development of the Associate group, implementation of Commonwealth and PHMC policies and procedures, and promotion of the site locally, regionally and nationally.

As the Site Administrator, you will also provide effective liaison with the Ephrata Cloister Associates (the museum's official support group), the local community, and other organizations, institutions, and individuals. The site administrator assists the Associates with annual planning, submission of annual agreements, and timely reporting to the Bureau office, providing appropriate non-profit management expertise and advice to the associate group to ensure compliance with Commonwealth agreements and professional museum ethical standards. The site administrator also plans, approves, directs, and implements grant writing and fundraising development activities on behalf of the historic site in coordination with the Ephrata Cloister Associates. This is a professional museum administrator position requiring subject matter expertise related to the historic site, its era of history and the museum profession in general.
