Lineman - Hourly

Office of Public Safety Administration

International Secure Communications Network (ISCN)

Number of Positions: 2

(Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Starting Annual Salary: $64.58/hr

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with I.B.E.W. LOCAL 9 - BARGAINING 29. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under supervision, installs, repairs, and tests aerial and underground electrical wires, fixtures, and related equipment, and performs related duties as required

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

* Installs and connects electrical lines, fiber optics, and cables to power sources

* Splices and terminates copper and fiber optic cables

* Cuts, bends, and fits conduit into trenches and installs new electrical wire

* Relocates existing electrical installations and fixtures to facilitate street construction projects

* Performs voltage tests to determine type of wire and level of functionality

* Locates and repairs breaks in underground electrical lines

* Removes decayed or broken cable and installs new conduit pipe and cable

* Assembles and installs electrical fixtures (e.g., light poles, lamps, traffic signal heads, surveillance cameras)

* Tests fire alarm circuits and the timing of traffic signals and street lamps to ensure proper operation

* Prepares work activity reports

* Operates an aerial boom from a line truck to reach aerial wires, as required

* Marks cable locations on streets to prevent damage by other work crews and contractors, as required

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

* Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered Lineman apprenticeship training program and journeyman status

Should the above criteria not be fulfilled, the following options are available:

o Successful completion of a U.S. Department of Labor registered apprenticeship training program as an Electrician/Wireman and journeyman status, PLUS two (2) years of electrical construction work experience OR

o Successful completion of an industry or company sponsored apprenticeship training program as a Lineman, PLUS two (2) years of journey-level Lineman and/or as an electrical power line or telecommunications line installer and repairer work experience OR

o Six (6) years of journey-level Lineman, and/or an electrical power line or telecommunications line installer and repairer work experience

Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications

* A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required

* Some positions may require to have the permanent use of an automobile that is properly insured, including a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability

WORKING CONDITIONS

* Exposure to outdoor weather conditions

* Exposure to fumes or dust

* Exposure to hazardous conditions (e.g., traffic, heavy machinery)

* Work performed above or below ground level

* Work performed using scaffolds and ladders

* Work performed at great heights with the use of safety belts

EQUIPMENT

* Hand tools (e.g., sledge hammer, wire strippers, wire cutters, head wrench)

* Power tools (e.g., hydraulic boom, chipping gun, roto-hammer, cutting torch)

* Personal protective equipment (e.g., hard hat, shoes, glasses, gloves, vest, pads)

* Safety devices or equipment (e.g., cones, barricades, metal plates, scaffolding, ropes)

* Electrical testing and monitoring equipment

* Measuring tools (e.g., tape measure, ruler, calipers, measuring wheel)

* Ladders

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

* Heavy lifting (up to 75 pounds) is required

* Ability to stand and walk for extended or continuous periods of time

* Ability to quickly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with one's body, arms, and/or legs

* Ability to climb staircases, ladders, and/or step stools

* Ability to access difficult to enter spaces (e.g., roofs, basements, cramped quarters)

* Ability to operate applicable hand tools, power tools, and equipment

* Ability to tolerate heights while working

NOTE: APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING PROGRAM CERTIFICATE(S), PROFESSIONAL LICENSES, PROFESSIONAL CARDS, JOURNEYMAN CARD, RESUME, A VALID STATE OF ILLINOIS DRIVER'S LICENSE, AND PROOF OF PROPERLY INSURED AUTOMOBILE INCLUDING A CLAUSE SPECIFICALLY INSURING THE CITY OF CHICAGO FROM ACCIDENT LIABILITY, MUST BE SUBMITTED AT THE TIME OF PROCESSING

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position does not require an interview. This position requires applicants to successfully complete a written/skills assessment test. Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after the test results have been compiled and analyzed. Applicants who receive a passing score on the written test will be invited to complete a practical assessment. Applicants who receive a passing score on both the written test and the hands-on assessment will be hired in lottery/random order. If you are a bidder, you will be selected in seniority order according to the collective bargaining agreement.
