About This Role

Responsible for assisting in and performing mechanical engineering design and analysis. Will assist in tasks related to computer modeling, testing, instrumentation, design, and fabrication. Will assist in failure analysis investigations. Work will be performed in the office, shop and occasionally out in the field. Will be responsible for planning and executing tests, as well as completing project goals/objectives that are accomplished within the prescribed timeframe with the assistance of coworkers. Will work with clients as a trusted advisor and provide them with sound engineering judgement and support as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Experience in the mass transit / railroad industry is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Performs all phases of the design process including concept generation, 3D modeling, hand calculations, FEA, prototyping and testing
  • Assist clients in managing aspects of design projects
  • Works with other team members to perform failure analysis, and cause finding.
  • Designs tests or fixtures to complete tests, takes test data and analyzes and prepares charts, graphs, sketches, diagrams, flow charts, and compiles and records engineering data to clarify design details or functional criteria.
  • Participates in field investigations and testing
  • Participates in designing, fabricating, installing, and modifying equipment, test equipment, and prototypes.
  • Confers with project personnel to provide technical advice and resolve problems.
  • Assists in preparing and conducting well- developed and well-prepared client presentations and reports.
  • Mechanical modeling using SolidWorks
  • Finite Element Analysis using ABAQUS

Education Required:

  • Bachelor's degree required in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Science/Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Agricultural Engineering.
  • Master's degree preferred in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Science/Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Agricultural Engineering.

Experience Requirements:

  • Experience designing mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
  • Experience using 3D modeling software, SolidWorks preferred.
  • Understanding of Finite Element Analysis preferred.
  • Drafting experience preferred
  • Good understanding of mechanical engineering design concepts and stress analysis
  • Background or familiarity with rail preferred but not required.

Computer Skills:

  • Intermediate/advanced skills in Excel, Word, and Internet software skills.
  • Profficiency with data acquisition and testing software such as Dewesoft X or LabVIEW preferred.
  • Matlab or Python preferred
  • Intermediate/advanced skills in SolidWorks or other 3D-Modeling packages.
  • ABAQUS or other Finite Element Analysis software preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Successful Completion of FE exam (or the ability to complete FE exam), preferred.
