Ball State University is seeking Temporary Telecommunications Officer to assist the Department of Public Safety.

What you'll do and what you'll bring:

Position Function

  • Serve the public and facilitate the Department of Public Safety's response to the public's call for service; monitor the safety and well-being of officers in the field; respond to emergency and non-emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Up to eighteen months of education beyond high school or equivalent; must have State IDACS certification and maintain certification and renewal every two years; must complete division training within six months of employment.

  • Over three months through one year in police, fire, or other communications services (hotline, dispatch); must have easily-understood speaking voice and ability to remain calm during emergency situations.

  • Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree.

  • Over one year of dispatch/communications experience; IDACS certified; knowledge of BSU and Muncie streets, buildings, and relevant geography.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receive all telephone calls (911, 5-1111, or other lines as required) for assistance and/or service from the public and communicate those calls to the police officers and parking enforcement officers in the field; maintain communications with officers in the field for the purpose of monitoring their personal safety while on the call; enter all information regarding dispatched calls in the computer aided dispatch/records system.

  • Maintain telephone and radio communications with other public service agencies in the area (Muncie Police, Delaware County Police, Indiana State Police, Indiana State Excise Police, Muncie Fire Department, Delaware County EMS/paramedics; IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital police, and area wrecker/tow service companies; monitor and communicate with the public via all campus emergency phones on campus grounds and within campus elevators.

  • Conduct electronic communications/transactions with the state and federal system (IDACS/NCIC) where there exists lawful probable cause for the transaction; includes determine valid drivers, licensed vehicles, wanted persons, criminal histories, stolen items, etc.; maintain proficiency in IDACS and NCIC rules and regulations.

  • Monitor the university's JC-85/Metasys alarm systems; includes burglar and/or intrusion alarms, personal/office threat alarms, fire/smoke detector alarms, building water and temperature alarms; monitor closed circuit surveillance cameras in university parking lots.

  • Monitor police department building surveillance and electronic door access; greet walk-in public during non-business hours; receive payments and process after-hours parking fines, boots/tows.

  • Perform specialized duties and be responsible for unique specialty areas/duties such as serving as IDACS coordinator, serving as EMD instructor, ensuring certifications are maintained and keeping records for certifications, ensuring proper quality control protocols, maintaining car and portable radios, training new dispatch officers, assisting with the development of information in the CAD system and serving as primary contact for dispatch with the CAD system.

  • Serve as backup for City/County 911 overflow calls.

  • Prepare call data research for agency and BSU administration; supplement police reports as needed.

  • Maintain trespass warnings for the university.

  • Work security assignments at special events (commencement, ball games, concerts, etc.) as required or requested.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
