Hourly Rate: $39.35
Position Summary Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Steam Plant Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Central Steam Plant to ensure that a continuous and adequate steam supply is provided to all connected campus facilities. The Steam Plant Engineer will monitor the operation of the Central Steam Plant equipment on a continuous basis and start, stop, operate, and/or dispatch the appropriate equipment necessary to maintain the steam supply to the campus. The Steam Plant Engineer will monitor and accurately record various plant parameters (pressure, temperature, flow, etc.) and meter readings on a regular basis as required for plant performance monitoring and regulatory recordkeeping compliance. The Steam Plant Engineer will perform the routine mechanical and electrical work necessary to maintain the plant equipment and steam distribution system in working order. The Steam Plant Engineer will also perform similar tasks in the Standby Generator Facility.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Must have a valid US driver's license or the ability to obtain one if hired.
Required Education and Experience * High School or Trade School diploma. * Minimum of five (5) years' experience in the Operation and Maintenance of high-pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment, including de-aerators, feed-water pumps, forced draft fans, steam lines and traps, water softeners, air compressors, and other job-related equipment. * A current, validated Philadelphia Class "A" Engineers license. * An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Education and Experience * Completion of a union apprenticeship program.
Required Skills and Abilities * Ability to maintain, repair, and operate a broad range of General Building equipment, including fans, pumps, air compressors, operate large tonnage air conditioning units, boilers, and steam-driven equipment. * Ability to maintain, repair, and operate building heaters and central air conditioning equipment. * Ability to maintain, repair, and operate Boiler Room equipment and to have repair skills surrounding areas related to the Boiler Room equipment. * Expert knowledge in the operation and maintenance of fossil fuel-fired saturated steam plants and internal combustion engine-driven electric generating plants. * Fundamental understanding of water chemistry as it pertains to steam plant operations. * Fundamental understanding of central utility (steam, chilled water, and electric power) plant operating theory as it pertains to steam plant and standby generator plant operations. * Fundamental understanding of the operation and functioning of combustion control, burner management, and boiler auxiliary equipment control systems. * Basic knowledge of fundamental engineering principles, including the properties of steam, water, and air, and their utilization in, and interaction in, a fossil fuel-fired central steam plant. * Ability to read and understand equipment maintenance and repair manuals, plant process and instrument diagrams, electrical distribution diagrams, and other documentation as required for plant operations. * Possess the basic mechanical and electrical skills necessary to perform routine plant maintenance tasks. * Knowledge of safe work practices (including PPE requirements for work assignments), applicable building codes, and government regulations including, but not limited to, NEC, OSHA, and NFPA70E. * Ability to utilize personal computers & software (Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) for routine daily tasks (reports, business communications, etc.) and plant monitoring and operation.
