Responsibilities

Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a 108 bed intensive and highly structured residential treatment for psychiatric and behavioral health needs of adolescent males and females ages 11-18yrs. Newport News has an on-site certified school, therapists, and vocational programming. Newport News, VA is a beautiful seaside city, rich in maritime history and conveniently located to DC and other major North Eastern cities.

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for performing history and physical examinations on patients/residents, review of lab work as needed, review of immunization records, and addressing medical issues upon referral of the attending physician with appropriate medication management.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • 24-hour notification by the facility; performs history and physical examinations on patients/residents admitted to the facility.
  • Document results of histories and physicals in the medical record of each patient/resident at the time of the assessment.
  • Based upon assessment of the patient's medical condition, provides/prescribes a recommendation for a plan of treatment and follow up with the Staff Psychiatrist.
  • Will be available for medical consultations regarding patients at the request of Staff Psychiatrists on an as needed basis.
  • Review immunization records and prescribe needed vaccinations.
  • Corrects deficiencies in a timely manner, within one week of notification.
  • Makes referrals to specialists as needed.
  • Reviews labs as requested by psychiatrist and prescribes/makes recommendations for treatment.
  • Performs Medical clinic evaluations of medical issues of residents, patients in coordination with nursing supervisor in addition to H & P exams of new patients.

Qualifications

Position Qualifications:

Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university. Must be licensed in the state of Virginia and have prescriptive authority and a DEA license. A minimum of three (3) years' experience as a Certified Nurse Practitioner, any specialty, is preferred. Must be able to communicate effectively with other health care professionals, both verbally and in writing. Prefer one (1) year experience working and/or treating adolescents.
