About the Team/Role

As the Director of Software Engineering, this leader will be responsible for the technical direction, development, and operational excellence of WEX's critical credit application platform. This role involves enhancing the end-to-end customer journey, streamlining credit underwriting, and ensuring compliance and fraud prevention. The ideal candidate will be a strong, empathetic, and passionate leader who can manage a complex technical team, collaborate with diverse stakeholders, and drive continued innovation and efficiency in a high-impact area of the business. The role requires a hands-on approach to problem-solving and a deep technical understanding of building and scaling applications.

How you'll make an impact

  • Strategic Leadership & Vision: Lead the engineering and strategic evolution of the Digital Credit Application, ensuring it meets business and customer needs while challenging the status quo for continuous improvement.

  • Team & People Management: Grow and build a strong, global engineering team, providing effective guidance, coaching, and mentorship on engineering principles and best practices. Foster a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and diversity of thought.

  • Technical & Product Ownership: Take technical ownership of the application, including its architecture, technical direction, and engineering best practices. Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of the DCA platform, ensuring an updated, modern look and feel that is suitable for desktops, tablets, and mobile devices.

  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Partner closely with leaders across the organization, including business, digital, and risk teams, to deeply understand their needs and jointly develop effective technical solutions.

  • Operational Excellence: Drive the development of a reliable platform, ensuring strong security, quality, reliability, usability, and scalability. Ensure needed observability and provide clear visibility to partners on the status of development, quality, and performance.

  • Execution & Accountability: Create, prioritize, manage, and execute roadmaps and project plans with a high bar for quality. Uphold strong DORA metrics and take financial responsibility for your team.

Experience you'll bring

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field is required; a higher degree is a plus.

  • 10+ years of software design and development experience at a large scale, with 3-5+ years of people management experience.

  • Deep technical expertise and hands-on experience in architecture design, development, deployment, and production operations.

  • Strong experience with the full software development lifecycle, including agile methodologies, modern development tools, and CI/CD automation.

  • Experience in Java, J2EE, Spring and Microservice Architecture.

  • Experience with application development and a strong understanding of web standards.

  • Led design and implementation of user-centric digital applications, focusing on UX and conversion rates.

  • Monitored application performance with data/analytics, troubleshooting anomalies, and building proactive systems for real-time insights.

  • Translated customer feedback and stakeholder expectations into development priorities, communicating business impact of technical and UX issues.

  • Proven ability to lead global teams and attract top engineering talent.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Salesforce knowledge is a plus.

  • Experience in the financial services or payments industry is a plus.

The base pay range represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position. Actual pay rates will vary and will be based on various factors, such as your qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base pay is one component of WEX's total compensation package. Most sales positions are eligible for commission under the terms of an applicable plan. Non-sales roles are typically eligible for a quarterly or annual bonus based on their role and applicable plan.
