The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiasednews in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

We are seeking an editor to lead a global, high-performing team responsible for one of APNews.com's most visible digital formats. The role of Live Blog News Editor is a newsroom leadership position - not an entry-level editing role - and requires sharp editorial judgment, people-first management and an ability to steer live coverage on the world's biggest stories.

You'll oversee the editorial direction, daily execution and long-term strategy for AP's live blogs, which serve as a go-to destination for real-time reporting on breaking news, major events and cultural moments. This role involves managing journalists across time zones and formats, partnering closely with visuals and product and ensuring that live blogs not only inform but also engage and serve audiences globally.

This is one of the newsroom's most intense and rewarding roles. It calls for someone who can act quickly without compromising quality, foster a strong team culture under pressure and keep the AP's journalism sharp, human and audience-focused.

Responsibilities:

* Lead AP's live blog strategy across major storylines, coordinating real-time coverage across time zones, formats and platforms

* Manage and mentor a global team of live blog editors and contributors, providing clear guidance, training and thoughtful support

* Make fast, confident editorial decisions during breaking news, upholding AP's standards for accuracy, fairness and clarity

* Shape tone and pacing, ensuring live blogs match the moment - whether the news is serious, fast-moving, or celebratory

* Refine workflows and identify ways to streamline processes to ensure maximum impact with minimum resource disruptions.

* Oversee planning and scheduling, making sure the team is prepared for key news moments and marquee events

* Collaborate with visuals, video, product, and platform teams to enhance live blog templates, integrate multimedia and improve audience experience

* Use analytics and reader signals to assess performance and refine live coverage strategy

* Create and share best practices for live blogging across the newsroom, including SEO, CMS use and real-time reporting techniques

* Lead with empathy and clarity, offering both strategic direction and day-to-day support, especially during sustained or high-intensity news cycles

Required Qualifications:

* A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, such as at least five years of professional newsroom experience, including at least two in an editorial leadership role.

* At least five years of professional newsroom experience, including at least two in an editorial leadership role.

* Experience running or contributing to real-time news coverage, including live blogs, social streams, or live video.

* Demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams in fast-paced digital environments.

* Excellent editorial judgment and strong writing and editing skills.

* Experience working collaboratively across departments, especially with visuals, product and audience teams.

* Familiarity with analytics tools and content performance metrics.

* Deep understanding of digital storytelling, SEO and live coverage formats.

* Eligibility to work in the U.S. or the ability to obtain permission to do so.

* Advanced-level professional proficiency in both written and spoken English; proficiency in additional languages is a plus.

* The ability and willingness to work occasional early mornings, evenings and some weekends as you juggle a 24/7 news cycle and a team that spans time zones.

Preferred Qualifications:

* You lead with calm, clarity and purpose, even when news is breaking fast.

* You value both editorial quality and team well-being, and you know how to balance the two.

* You're energized by collaboration and bring others into your process early.

* You understand that tone and voice are key to good digital storytelling.

* You adapt quickly and work well when things don't go according to plan.

* You see leadership as an opportunity to grow people, not just manage output.

* You approach feedback - both giving and receiving - as a tool for growth.

We welcome candidates with a range of experiences and backgrounds. If you don't meet every qualification but believe you'd be a strong fit for this role, we encourage you to apply and use your cover letter to tell us what you'd bring to the team.
