  • Develop concrete materials testing plans and performance criteria for projects, establishing procedures to evaluate material properties and ensure they meet design specifications.
  • Prepare and review concrete material specifications and quality control procedures that will guide material procurement and installation in compliance with industry standards and client requirements.
  • Provide project phasing and constructability review for material elements.
  • Lead the evaluation and approval of concrete submittals and material certifications during design and construction phases, providing expert oversight for quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) on all concrete-related work.
  • Reviewing laboratory test results, evaluating whether materials and mixes meet applicable ASTM/ACI standards, and recommending adjustments or corrective actions to address non-conformances.
  • Advise on the selection of concrete materials for various project components and environmental conditions.
  • Recommend appropriate cement types, supplementary cementitious materials, chemical admixtures, and curing methods to achieve required durability and service life objectives.
  • Incorporate considerations for long-term performance (such as sulfate resistance, alkali-silica reactivity mitigation, and corrosion protection) into material specifications and design documents.
  • Collaborate closely with structural engineers, geotechnical engineers, and hydraulic engineers to integrate concrete material considerations into overall project designs.
  • Develop material performance requirements that align with structural design needs and ground conditions, supporting a holistic approach to design quality.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary design reviews and risk assessments by providing specialized input on concrete behavior and material-related design decisions.
  • Provide technical leadership during concrete construction phases by overseeing material-related activities.
  • Monitor field performance of concrete (through strength tests, inspections, etc.) and troubleshoot material issues or deviations from specifications, implementing solutions to maintain quality.
  • Serve as a mentor and technical resource for mid-career engineers and other team members in the field of concrete materials engineering.
  • Lead or contribute to internal quality reviews of project deliverables related to concrete materials, such as specifications, drawings, and reports.
  • Review documentation and design outputs for conformance with company standards and client material requirements and perform high-level reviews of material test data and contractor submittals for compliance and accuracy.
  • Provide input on project scheduling, budgeting, and constructability as it relates to concrete materials. Evaluate how material choices and specifications may impact project costs, construction schedules, and methodologies.
  • Advise project managers and clients on cost-effective, practical material solutions (e.g., alternative cement blends or aggregate sources) that achieve performance goals without compromising quality or safety.
  • Maintain effective communication with project managers, clients, and team members regarding material performance expectations, specifications, and issues that arise.
