Expectations for this Role:

Sentara Health is seeking a Sr. Director, IT. The Senior Information Technology Director of Infrastructure and Operations will lead enterprise-wide infrastructure services. This leader will oversee the planning, implementation, and optimization of core IT infrastructure-including data center platforms, epic technical and integration, cloud services, database management, enterprise compute and storage, virtualization, and disaster recovery. Reporting directly to the CTO, this role plays a pivotal part in ensuring operational excellence, business continuity, and infrastructure scalability across the organization.

Strategic Leadership

  • Define and execute the infrastructure and operations roadmap aligned with Sentara Health's enterprise technology strategy.
  • Provide leadership for hybrid (on-prem/cloud) environments, ensuring scalability, security, and resilience.
  • Oversee infrastructure services including cloud platforms, data centers, virtualization, compute, storage, and backup/recovery systems.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams through transformation initiatives, including cloud adoption, standardization, and modernization.
  • Strong communicator adept at translating complex technical concepts into business terms for senior leadership and board-level audiences.
  • Builds collaborative partnerships across IT, clinical, security, and business operations to drive enterprise-wide alignment and outcomes.

Technology & Innovation

  • Drive modernization initiatives, including infrastructure automation, platform-as-a-service (PaaS), and cloud-native architectures.
  • Partner with Chief Enterprise architecture and application teams to ensure seamless infrastructure support for clinical and business systems.
  • Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies to improve agility and support digital transformation goals.

Operational Resilience and Compliance

  • Lead disaster recovery planning, testing, and infrastructure readiness within the CTO organization and partner with the CISO organization on cyber resiliency.
  • Ensure infrastructure and data systems meet HIPAA, HITRUST, NIST, and internal audit standards.
  • Mitigate operational and security risks through proactive controls and operational rigor.

Vendor and Budget Management

  • Manage contracts and performance of infrastructure vendors, database platform providers, and integration partners.
  • Develop and manage multi-million-dollar capital and operating budgets, identifying opportunities for cost efficiency and innovation.

People Leadership

  • Build and lead a high-performing team of infrastructure engineers, systems administrators, database administrators, and integration specialists.
  • Promote a culture of innovation, agility, and continuous improvement within infrastructure and operations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field; master's preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive IT leadership experience with at least 5 years in a senior infrastructure and/or operations leadership role.
  • Proven experience leading hybrid infrastructure environments (on-prem + cloud), clinical data integration, and enterprise database operations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of healthcare data interoperability standards and enterprise architecture principles.
  • Strong understanding of ITSM frameworks (ITIL, COBIT) and infrastructure governance practices.
  • Demonstrated success leading infrastructure transformation in a healthcare or regulated industry environment.

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, and benefits. The base pay rate for Full Time employment is:$156,977.60-$291,532.80. Additional compensation may be available for this role such as shift differentials, standby/on-call, overtime, premiums, extra shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.
