Job Summary

Responsible for the maintenance of the Quality Assurance Program in the Adult Cell Therapy Lab (ACTL) which includes review of ACTL staff documentation, document control, and review of quality control. Performs audits, risk assessments, investigations, adverse event workups, and assists with external and internal inspections. Assist with regulatory compliance, participate in quality improvement tasks and initiatives. Perform other tasks as required.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $72.23 - $90.01 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Adult Cell Therapy Laboratory (ACTL) serves the needs of adult patients cared for by the UCSF Hematologic Blood and Cellular Therapies (HBC) Program, Cancer Immuno Therapy Program (CIP), and Heme Research Program. Additionally, the ACTL serves the needs of any other department using cell therapy products like the Cardiac Pulmonary department, HIV department, Solid Organ Transplant department, Neuro Onc department, etc.
The ACTL processes over 400 cellular therapy products to include Peripheral Blood Stem Cells, Bone Marrow cells, and Immune Effector Cells (IEC) collections each year for immediate use, and offers long-term cell storage in liquid nitrogen.
ACTL activities are performed within the current Good Tissue Practice (cGTP) guidelines of the state and federal government, and within professional society guidelines. The ACTL follows the regulations of FDA, CAP, CLIA and state of California. ACTL complies with the professional guidelines of FACT, NMDP, ICCBBA, and all commercial/research IEC companies.

Required Qualifications


  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations
  • Demonstrated superior theoretical knowledge, technical judgment and skills and the ability to work with a minimum of supervision
  • Assumes responsibilities for keeping abreast of technical developments through current literature review
  • As requested by a Chemistry Supervisor, evaluates new procedures and makes recommendations
  • Thorough knowledge in the fields of Cellular Therapy Processing and Storage and in Immunology
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work in all UCSF Medical Center locations as needed
  • College graduate with a BS in a related science
  • Good Technical and Teaching Skills
  • Ability to make sound decisions and good judgment
  • Must have high level of awareness for unusual or abnormal results and good problem solving skills
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and relate to supervisors and co-workers.
  • Must have excellent communication skills
  • Must produce accurate, complete, legible records of work performed
  • Recent experience in a clinical laboratory setting that handle blood products using aseptic technique, knowledge of cGMP and blood product component processing and isolation
  • Min. Two years of recent experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist

Preferred Qualifications


  • HPC cryopreservation using liquid nitrogen. Familiar with the reagents, materials, and procedures used in cryopreservation.
  • Operation, maintenance and quality control of liquid nitrogen storage tanks. Familiar with the designing inventory system for patient's HPC product and aliquot samples using liquid nitrogen storage tank
  • Operation and maintenance of Program Rate Freezer (PRF).
  • Flow Cytometer analysis. This includes staining, acquisition and analysis of samples for CD34 and CD3. Familiar with maintenance and quality control of the flow cytometer machine.
  • Experience in performing thawing of HPC products and the use of aseptic technique.
