Position Title: Weld Manufacturing Engineer

Position Summary: This position is responsible for closely partnering with the Steel Fitting and Welding Department to drive quality for all aspects of fabrication in a fast paced, dynamic maritime construction environment at our vast, 63-acre facility. This role serves as a leader and advocate for all employees and supervisors in a heavy manufacturing capacity. In addition to overseeing the fabrication efforts for new construction of both commercial and military build, the successful candidate will support the 500+ working men and women on our waterfront by working in our Fabrication Shop to ensure maximum efficiencies; communicating with our Engineering and Production Planning & Control departments to determine manufacturability of models; staying up to date on all advancements in the fabrication trades, and proposing and implementing capital expenditures.
Detailed Description:
- Ensure employee safety is the top priority for all production personnel. This includes, but is not limited to, conducting incident investigations, inspections, vessel walk-throughs, interactive audits, hazard awareness, SOP & JSA Development and training.
- Develop and implement a plan to grow the apprenticeship program for steel trades.
- Serve as a model for all apprentice programs, and seek feedback from apprentices.
- Train and instruct employees across all of FBS in the most efficient ways of completing a job.
- Manage and operate a robust system of training & enhancing current employee skills to fill staffing needs; to include pipe welders and welding machine operators.
- Continuously evaluate employee skill levels through an ongoing employee development process.
- Establish and implement departmental goals, objectives and procedures in conjunction with Senior Leadership.
- Communicate employee skill levels with their supervisors to ensure proper job assignments.
- Discuss with the hiring manager the candidate's skill level, after the candidate skills assessment.
- Develop and maintain a process for monitoring the stock levels of consumable welding materials.
- Requisition consumables, parts, & tools as directed.
- Manage and operate the welder testing facility (weld school).
- Coordinate weld testing times & dates with Human Resources and necessary production stakeholders.
- Effectively perform and communicate root cause analysis for inefficiencies.
- Participate in meetings with Project Management to obtain status of FBS goals and objectives.
- Collaborate in the development, review, and implementation of company procedure, plans and work instruction.
- Manage the development and delivery of useful production plans and work orders that reflect best production practices and best achievable performance, so as to facilitate excellent production process performance.
- Support the continuous improvement with the goal to achieve best practices and optimal output.
- Regularly propose, implement, and document process improvements throughout the yard.
- Optimize welding productivity and performance throughout the yard.
- Work closely with the Engineering and Production & Planning Control departments to determine manufacturability of all models.
- Work with Project Management to help create accurate manpower hours for new construction bids.
- Lead an initiative to review and update current production metrics to be used with new construction bids.
- Conduct tests and inspections of products and processes to evaluate quality, performance and inefficiencies.
- Recommend capital improvements or renovating of current facilities, with an eye on optimizing work flow.
- Make inferences from reports concerning such areas as work progress, costs, scheduling, etc.
- Implement strategic initiatives to correct issues and maximize existing intellectual and material capital.

Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma
- Either certification in, or immediate willingness to complete ASNT NDT Level II Certification Program
- Extensive knowledge of welding processes, including FCAW, SMAW, GTAW, SAW, & GMAW
- Passage of basic ABS Weld Test (3G Vertical Up-Wire Size .052, straight CO2, on 3/4" Steel)
- Advanced coursework in one of the following: Welding Technology; Welding and Fabrication Engineering; Industrial Engineering; Production Engineering; General Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; or Materials Science
- Experience in Quality Control and Inspection
- CWI or CWS Certification
- Excellent communication abilities
- Highly accountable
- Minimum of 5 years management experience in steel fabrication / weld
- Commitment to quality
Desired Qualifications:
- Prior shipyard experience a plus
- 7+ years management experience or commensurate education
- Bachelor Degree within Engineering Discipline
- Level ASNT III NDT/NDE Certification
- Prior use of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook
