First Merchants Bank is launching a dedicated Nonprofit Division to empower mission-driven organizations with tailored financial solutions. The Director of Nonprofit Services will lead this initiative, driving strategy, growth, and community engagement across key metro areas. This role combines leadership, relationship management, and sector expertise to position First Merchants as the premier banking partner for nonprofits.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Strategic Leadership & Market Development

    • Lead the launch and expansion of the Nonprofit Division across First Merchants Bank's footprint.
    • Develop and execute a comprehensive go-to-market strategy aligned with the division's mission and value proposition.
    • Identify and prioritize target markets and nonprofit segments using data-driven insights (e.g. GuideStar).
    • Build and manage a high-performing team of nonprofit banking and investment professionals.


  • Client Relationship Management

    • Serve as a trusted advisor to nonprofit clients, offering customized lending, depository, and investment solutions.
    • Host listening sessions, financial roundtables, and educational events to deepen relationships and understand client needs.
    • Establish referral networks with nonprofit consultants, attorneys, and CPAs.


  • Branding & Community Engagement

    • Champion the division's identity and messaging: "Empowering Nonprofits to Grow Mission and Impact with Trusted Financial Partnerships."
    • Represent First Merchants Bank at nonprofit conferences, community events, and board meetings.
    • Oversee the creation of digital content, blogs, and video stories that highlight community impact and client success.


  • Internal Collaboration & Training

    • Train internal teams on nonprofit sector fundamentals and referral processes.
    • Appoint and support Nonprofit Ambassadors across the organization to foster board service and community involvement.
    • Collaborate with marketing, compliance, and product teams to ensure alignment and execution.


  • Performance Metrics & Reporting

    • Track and report on key performance indicators, including:

      • New nonprofit clients acquired
      • Asset and loan growth in the nonprofit segment
      • Engagement with nonprofit content and events
      • Continuously assess and refine strategies based on performance data and market feedback.






To be successful in this position, we require the following:



  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Nonprofit Management, or related field.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in nonprofit banking, nonprofit leadership, or mission-driven financial services.


The following would be a plus:



  • Master's Degree in Business or Business Administration.
  • Proven track record of business development and relationship management in the nonprofit sector.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit financial structures, funding models, and governance.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and strategic planning skills.
  • Passion for community impact and alignment with First Merchants Bank's values.
